True Hauntings:
Spirits with a Purpose
by Hazel H. Denning, Ph.D.Legal Help from the Grave
Numerous
stories have come to my attention regarding
husbands who return to assist their wives with
the legal and financial problems that frequently
follow the death of a family provider. One case
that I encountered in my own investigations
involved a very gentle lady who knew absolutely
nothing about business. She was the epitome of
the helpless female. Her husband treated her as
his most cherished possession. He provided her
with a housekeeper who ran the house and was an
excellent cook.
The
woman had many friends and enjoyed a busy social
life, with practically no real responsibilities.
They had no children to occupy her time. When her
husband died of a heart attack she was totally
unprepared to take responsibility for her own
affairs.
Shortly
after the funeral, feeling abandoned, she was
lying in her bed, weeping, when she felt a
presence in the room. At first she was
frightened, since she knew the housekeeper was
out marketing. Then she saw her husband, standing
at the side of her bed. He looked at her sadly
and assured her that she had nothing to fear. He
had come to help her.
She was
certain that her mind had snapped, and wondered
if she was really going crazy, but his presence
carried with it a powerful energy of love and
support. Her panic subsided as she listened to
him. He explained, in a practical way, where she
would find his will, which lawyer to call, and
where he kept the key to their safe deposit box.
He went on to explain that because his business
had suffered some reverses in recent months, she
would have to give up their large home and live
in smaller quarters. He was very sorry, but her
income would no longer support a maid and she
would have to learn to cook for herself. He
promised to stay with her until everything was
settled and she was knowledgeable about her
affairs and could manage alone.
She
discovered resources within herself which she had
never known she possessed. To her surprise she
found it challenging and satisfying to do
something that had significance. She faced her
situation courageously and, salvaging what she
could from her husband's business, invested
enough to give herself a small, regular income.
She had absolutely no marketable skills, for she
had never worked for a salary. She sold her home
and rented a very small house, which she
furnished with her most cherished possessions.
Afterwards she sold the rest of their household
furnishings.
For a
number of weeks, whenever new decisions had to be
made she would sit down and ask her husband for
help, and he would generally appear. At other
times she felt his presence. With her eyes closed
she could hear his voice, as though he spoke to
her mind. Then one day he told her she no longer
needed his help. She was doing well and knew
everything about their business that she needed
to know to handle her life alone. He reassured
her of his love and said good-bye. She felt his
energy leave her.
