Ghosts, Spirits, and Legends
of Southeastern Ohio
by Lawrence EverettThe Vanishing Couple
There was a house down across the road from the
meadow where I used to round up the cows and bring them in for milking. As I went around
the hill to find the cattle I could look straight down on to this abandoned house and the
garden on the other side of it. The people that had lived there were dead and no one was
supposed to be living there.
Once in a while I would see a woman out in this
garden with braided hair. She would be working in it, her braided hair showed up really
good for as far away as I was. There was a little man who would stand on the porch for a
while then turn around and walk back into the house. One time we had a cross bull in the
field and my uncle didn't want me going after the cattle alone, so he went with me to
round them up. As we went around the hill my uncle said, "Stop and take a look at
that, there is a little man who is coming out of that abandoned house and a woman in the
garden."
The man wore a straw hat and I said to my uncle,
"Let's get a little closer for a better look at this." We got as close as we
dared and watched the little man who would go in and out of the house. We just sat on the
side of the hill and watched them for the longest time. After a while they both went in
together and we didn't see them come out. This eerie phenomena happened about once a week,
the first thing you would see is the woman out in the garden, and then the little man
prancing back and forth, in and out of the house. It was like he didn't know whether to
stay in or out. He was very nervous acting.
One time after watching this phenomena we decided
to go over to this house to see who was staying there. When we got to the house there was
nothing or no one in there. It was like these people or spirits had vanished from the face
of the earth, after we had seen them go ionto the house. But within a week they would be
back doing the same thing over and over again. My uncle and I could never find a trace of
any people or ghosts in this abandoned house for we checked many times.
