Ghosts And Other Mysteries

Discouraged, but still hungry, they decided to eat. But much to their dismay, while the tire episode was going on, the chicken burned.

Disappointed, but still hungry, they waited as the hot dogs roasted on the fire. Or should I say, in the fire, for as they reached for their weenies which were just about finished roasting, the whole kit and caboodle fell into the fire, burning into ash.

Marvin and his friends thought it might be time to pack up and leave, and they would have left, except the spare tire, which was now on the car, was also flat.

The whole crew was now tired, hungry, disappointed, and Marvin, of course, was injured. It was at that moment they heard screams echoing down from the hills surrounding them. They then heard someone laughing at the top of the rock cliff, and someone yelled, "Look what I did!"

No need for discussion, they headed out on foot to hike home to Mount Joy. The night wasn’t over yet. As they climbed the hillside, in the otherwise breezeless, calm night, they became alarmed when they noticed the tops of the treetops swaying as if a violent wind were blowing.

As they peered down into a section of a clearing on the hillside, they saw a white mist form, resembling a small cloud. This white mist rolled over the hillside, parallel to the four frightened people, then changed direction and headed straight for them. As it rolled even closer, the frightened people noticed a distinct drop in temperature.

Their mission, after watching the strange white mist roll over the hillside, headed straight for them, was simple: get out of there!

The foursome, frightened out of their wits, and Marvin, limping on his injured foot, hurried out of the wooded area. By the way, Marvin’s injured foot, the one punctured by the lug nut, took two stitches to close the wound.

Marvin also has some advice for those who go to Chickies Rock. In fact, they were the very first words he spoke during our telephone interview, and the very last words he spoke: "Don’t be at Chickies Rock after dark*."

*Marvin (pseudonym). Telephone interview by author. 13 August 1996.
