I had been invited to investigate the psychic disturbances reported at the 1915 era
mansion in the Ojai. I made this a field trip for my class at Ventura College. About 30
people came for the pot luck and ghost hunt. One woman brought her dog, a large German
shepherd. Touring the house and grounds, many impressions were felt but nothing
distinctive. The psychic on this investigation was Mrs. N.. After dinner we all gathered
at the huge fireplace made of "Indian sacred stones." The woman who was buying
the massive house had complained of encountering "Indian spirits" and hearing
chants. We were about to leave when a wave of cold air suddenly flooded into the large
room. It was the first real manifestation that proved that a ghost was indeed present. I
stood up and tried to determine where the coldness was coming from. The temperature seemed
to drop ten degrees and everyone in the room felt the chill. Mrs. N. stood up and said
"Its a woman, she is leaving the room!" The psychic then pointed to a
door. With the hairs rising on the back of my neck, I followed Mrs. N. out of the room and
into a short hall. Several braver members of the group followed behind while most of the
group stayed in the dining room. The hall lead to the largest room in the house, a
ballroom that was bare of any furniture. Mrs. N. motioned to me to enter the darkened room
first. I stepped in, and was suddenly enveloped with cold; a cold that seemed to penetrate
deep within my bones. To my right, down another hall illuminated only by moonlight,
materialized the image of woman in an old fashioned dress. Mrs. N. and her husband as well
as four others all saw the ghost. One student claimed in an excited tone "I see her,
I see her!" The phantom appeared solid; she stopped and glanced over her shoulder at
us, and then slowly faded away. Six of us saw and described the apparition, agreeing on
the details of the dress, such as the ruffle on the hem. She was visible for only a minute
or perhaps a minute and a half, but it seemed longer. After she vanished, the temperature
slowly returned to normal. |
