Ghostly Tales and
Mysterious Happenings of Old Monterey
by Randall A. ReinstedtA second very
real ghost from the same bygone era once occupied
a house only a short distance from Cannery Row.
Although the house predates the days when the
sardine was king, the ghostly happenings recorded
in this Monterey home had their beginnings during
the heyday of Old Cannery Row.
The
story, as related to the author, had it beginning
in the 1930s when the man of the house passed
into the great beyond. Sensing his time was near,
the man made a few last requests, among them
being an expressed desire that his wife not work.
All went well until the canneries began operating
double shifts and an urgent call went out for
workers. Being but a few minutes' walk from this
booming industry, and having time on her hands,
the wife decided to give the canneries a try.
Securely
locking her house each day as she left for work,
the lady returned at the end of her shift to find
the house still securely locked - but the
interior a shambles! Day after day this took
place, and night after night the tired lady would
spend her time putting the house back in order.
Finally, totally frustrated and tired of cleaning
her house each evening, the lady quit her job ...
and from that time on her house remained as neat
as a pin.
Many
years later a second rather strange occurrence is
described as having taken place at this same
Monterey address. On occasion, when the widowed
wife of the above tale would entertain her
grandson on periodic visits, the young lad would
be placed in an adjoining room where he could
sleep without being disturbed. Upon checking the
boy to be sure all was in order, a "luminous
fog" was often observed hovering over the
child ..., as if guarding the lad and offering
its protection.
