Passing Strange, True
Tales of New England Hauntings and Horrors
by Joseph A. CitroAround 1970, when Diana
Deans of Orland, Maine, was about 10 years old,
she invited her best friend for a sleep-over. It
was nighttime, but Diana remembers a beautiful
full moon that lit everything outside with a kind
of silvery light.
After a
few hours of good-natured interaction, the two
girls bedded down in the living room-after much
giggling and talking-eventually fell asleep.
For some
reason, they both woke up at the same time.
Looking
around for the cause, Diana chanced to glance out
the living room window. Scanning the darkened
yard and the road beyond, she suddenly perceived
motion. Looking harder now, she saw a solitary
figure, moving up the road toward the house.
But
there was something odd about it. Something was
not as it should be.
Diana
continued to observe the figure, trying to
determine what was strange about the sight.
The form
of the creature, for all intents and purposes,
appeared to be human. But the dress was
eccentric. It wore a long black cape with a hood
that fully covered its head. The person might
have been perceived as some sort of medieval
monk, except for one thing...
Whatever
it was, was not walking. It was gliding along,
weightlessly, moving horizontally a few inches
above the road. There was no motion of moving
limbs beneath the dark fabric.
Diana
saw all this clearly in the light of the full
moon. Doubting the testimony of her own eyes,
Diana called her friend to have a look.
Her
friend saw it, too. Both girls stared with
mounting fear as the dark-robed figure continued
up the road...
And
turned into their driveway.
Now it
was coming directly toward the house.
The
girls moved quickly into the kitchen so they
could get a better view from the window there.
Even though they'd changed location, the thing
had not. It was still out there, advancing toward
the house.
Terribly
frightened now, the girls ducked down below the
kitchen windowsill. Frozen, frightened, they
cowered there for what seemed a long time.
Eventually,
a terrible tension forced them to stand up to see
if the thing had gone.
What
they saw frightens Diana to this day.
Now the
figure was close enough for Diana to see its
head. The dark hood was clearly visible. But
inside, exactly where the face should be, there
was nothing but total blackness. No face. No
eyes. Nothing but the dark interior of the hood.
