Haunted Happenings
by Robert Ellis CahillRick struck me as a
serious minded, hard-working young man, and his
voice quivered as he told me his story, so I knew
he was reliving his experience as he told it.
"All
of a sudden it seemed to get smoky down there,
like there was a fog or something. I looked up
and saw two glowing golden lines in the air, like
light hairs, or a cobweb floating only about four
feet in front of me. I thought it was a web of
dust from the sandblaster at first, but then it
transformed into the likeness of a woman. She was
facing left and away from me, looking into the
stone wall which was only some ten feet away. Her
sandy-colored hair was down to her shoulders and
looped back up to a bun. She wore a tight fitting
skirt that flared at the hips. The sleeves were
puffy, but I couldn't see her lower body because
of piles of boxes between her and me. As I recall
it now, I should have realized that she couldn't
fit in that space. The background seemed 100 feet
and beyond, like there were buildings behind her.
I moved to my left and tried to better focus my
eyes. At first I thought she was a real woman,
but then I realized the perspective was all off.
When I waved my hand in front of my face, the air
seemed much colder. She began moving off and
getting smaller, like she was going through a
doorway to some other space. Her image was quite
clear and real to me. I wasn't horror-stricken,
but I felt very uncomfortable and I feared that
she might turn and face me. I don't know why, but
I'm glad I didn't see her face. Before this
happened to me, I didn't know that this place had
a history of sightings, so it was all a big
surprise for me. She gradually faded away into
the wall, and while this was happening, it seemed
like the wall was going away from the house.
Chuck Griffin, of course, wasn't too happy to
hear of my living nightmare in his newly acquired
property. The image appeared for only about
twenty seconds, but it was enough to scare the
hell out of me, and I told Chuck that I won't
work in the basement ever again."
Rick was
obviously sincere and I didn't doubt a word he
said. What intrigued me most was that this spirit
appeared to him underground. It seems that many
of the hauntings throughout the years in the
vicinity of the Frog Pond have been beneath the
earth's surface. And it also surprised me that
all the ghosts hanging around the jail complex
are women. A jail, I would think, should conjure
up male spirits.
