The Devils Backbone: Ghost Stories from the Texas Hill Country

truck was parked at the edge of the valley and all three young men began exploring the
creekbed together. It wasnt long before John found himself alone, but since it
isnt uncommon for explorers to take off in different directions, he didnt give
it a second thought.
As he continued walking up the creekbed, just before entering one of the tunnel areas,
he knelt down to take a closer look at a crystal rock that had been glistening in the sun.
Suddenly an extremely cold chill came upon him, as if he had stepped into a walk-in
freezer. When he attempted to stand up he found that gravity was playing a trick on him or
some other force had paralyzed him in the kneeling position. Within a split-second John
heard something rustling along the embankment. Then he saw it a large silver-gray
wolf surrounded by a strange haze of some sort. The animal was crouched in a small
clearing directly above him.
John was petrified since he was still unable to stand up. All he could do was hope this
predator would move on.
Suddenly, without provocation, the wolf leaped. It passed through Johns body
I repeat it passed through his body
there was no impact at
all
.the wolf was gone.
At the moment the wolf seemingly exited Johns body he fell backwards, as if
finally released from the force that had magnetized him in the kneeling position.
John scrambled to his feet and yelled out for B.C. and Corey. He ran back to the truck
where he found them waiting for him. He told them what had happened and that for some
reason he was still really cold. They got into the truck and started back to the house. By
the time they reached the top of the mountain Johns chill was gone but he felt
something was still inside him.
As John finished his accounting, I was convinced that he had entered a cold zone
a spirited area. I strongly suspected that somehow, by way of the wolf, John was given a
gift that only a very few people seem to develop a gift of insight into the
spiritual world. |
