The
Greenbrier Ghost and Other Strange Stories
by Dennis DeitzThe
Blue Light (by Carol McClung)
I am a
nurse and the story I would like to share with
you, happened to me shortly after I graduated
nursing school and went to work at a nursing
home.
I was
working the midnight shift in a nursing home the
first time I heard about "The Blue
Light". This particular night I was in the
medicine room with the door open when I heard
this awful scream. I stepped out to see what was
wrong. The scream had come from a cleaning lady,
who was by this time crying uncontrollably and
was white as a sheet; there were two nurses'
aides there too which appeared to be upset. I
asked what was wrong, the cleaning lady replied,
"I just saw the Blue Light". I asked
what was the Blue Light? They all exclaimed at
once, you mean you don't know about the Blue
Light? I said no, I don't guess I do. Well this
is the story they told to me. According to them
the Blue Light is a Phenomenon that is seen at
the nursing home before someone dies, just a big
blue flash of light, after which someone always
dies. Both of the aides said they had seen it
many times as they both worked there many years
and death is a common visitor at a nursing home.
Well, I did not necessarily believe this but they
were pretty upset and me being new on the job, I
just listened to their little story and kept my
opinion to myself as I always thought there was a
logical explanation for everything. Even though
the next day a little old lady died, I still
thought death comes often in a nursing home, just
a coincidence.
Then
about two months later at about 4 a.m., one of my
patients became very ill and I was trying to get
her transferred out to the hospital and things
were very busy and hectic. I was rushing around
making arrangements and as I was coming out of
the patient's room suddenly there was this great
big flash of light, it startled me so I stopped
and said "What was that?". The aide
with me, knowing I never really believed their
story, just smiled sweetly at me and replied,
"You just now saw the Blue Light";
needless to say that was the last thing I wanted
to hear with a critically ill patient on my
hands, but still I thought to myself a light bulb
or something had blown, but I did not have time
to ponder the situation just yet, as my patient
came first.
After
the patient had been safely transferred to the
hospital and I had time to investigate -
investigate I did - but to no avail every light
was burning and I could find no reason for that
big flash of blue light. And about my very sick
patient, she did not die, she got well and is
still living today. But a few days later we lost
another kindly old lady down that same hallway
where I had seen the Blue Light. Regarding the
Blue Light I only know what I saw and I know what
followed a few days later. I'm still not sure
just what I think about the Blue Light and I will
leave that up to your own imagination. But, as
for those aides, there's not a doubt in their
minds. The Blue Light means a death will follow.
