Haunted Bayou and
Other Cajun Ghost Stories
by J.J. Reneaux"My own grand-pere
saw the ghost of Pete Hudson. Pete was a
fisherman like you, and he left his buddies to go
down Haunted Bayou. Oh, they tried to warn him,
but he wouldn't listen. He swore he'd explore the
bayou and be out by nightfall, or he would 'smell
hell'. Pete Hudson never was seen again alive,
but his spirit is out there all right, along with
the others that disappeared.
"I
wouldn't believe it myself, but I saw them for
true when I was a boy. Me and Papa was out
fishin' late and found we had drifted too far
down the bayou and night was comin' on. Well, out
of the darkness comes a pirogue, all
covered with moss. From a distance we thought it
was some other fisherman comin' in late. But when
that boat come closer, we saw it was filled with
ghosts! All of them misty like and glowin' like
moonlight. Papa yelled for me to paddle while he
rowed. But it seemed like no matter how hard we
worked, we just couldn't make no headway
upstream. We were just splashin' and splashin'
and still goin' slow as cold molasses. That ghost
boat was almost on us, but when we come around
that big cure, right up from where we are fishin'
now, the curse let go of us. Padnat, we
got to paddlin' plenty fast then, I guarantee!
Ah, it's horrible to see them comin' at ya,
moaning' and hollerin' for help. But that curse
has got them trapped forever. They can never find
their way out of Haunted Bayou."
