Nantucket Hauntings:
Twenty-One Firsthand Encounters with the
Supernatural
by Blue BalliettConnie always felt that
the lady in black didn't like her at all.
"A
funny thing used to happen to Connie in the
living room. She would go out the back door to
the porch on the northwest side, you know, and no
sooner was she outside than that big old door
would slam behind her and lock. Now, in order to
lock it, you have to place a long board across
the inside of the door and fasten it with a
wooden peg. It was only when Connie dragged a
really heavy armchair in front of the door to
prop it open that it wouldn't slam to and lock
her out.
"Connie
used to visit me sometimes on her day off, and
she'd tell me what was happening in the household
and what the lady in black was up to. She'd say
to me, 'Flora, why don't you think she likes me?'
She was a sweet person, much sweeter by nature
than I am, and everybody liked her. She was lame,
and really round and short. I'd say, 'Well,
Connie, maybe she don't like you because you're
fat like she was.' Connie would laugh and laugh.
"I
never say the lady upstairs, but Connie did many
times. She used to see her standing quietly in
the master bedroom above the living room. At one
point Connie had the baby's bassinet up there.
Some days she'd be outside working when she'd
hear the baby start fussing. Well, of course
she'd hurry on up, which took her a few minutes,
being lame and all. By the time she got upstairs,
the baby would often be happily waving her hands
and making sounds the way she did when someone
was entertaining her. Connie would frown, even if
she couldn't see the lady, and snatch the baby up
and hurry downstairs. But I said, 'Why Connie,
what'd you do that for? They were perfectly
happy!'
"Connie
said that she had a lot of trouble, more trouble
than I really had, with things being moved and
rearranged in the living room. One of the things
I remember her telling me about concerned a
beautiful glass and satin screen, the kind of
standing screen you put up behind a chair to stop
drafts. It had four sections, and it was really
heavy. Connie said she used to find it carefully
moved across the room and folded up against one
of the love seats. That lady in black must've
been awful strong.
"Here's
something funny. Connie said she used to wash out
her underwear and hang it up to dry in the
bathroom next to the maid's room. Well, the next
time she'd go back in there, the underwear would
all be back in the tub soaking, ready for another
washing. I told Connie that maybe the lady
thought she used too much soap and needed to
rinse things out better. Oh, that lady was
particular, she was."
