Ghosts and Legends
of Frederick County
by Timothy L. Cannon and Nancy F. WhitmoreSometime before
the housewife's experience, she and her husband
watched a stray dog carry a bone from a pile of
dirt near their home. Later, two human skulls
were found. The two human remains unearthed in
this particular spot were approximately two
hundred years old and were identified as a man of
about 36 and a boy of 5 or 6. Apparently, they
had found the long sought after graveyard.
It was
after this unearthing that the eerie events
started in several homes of Amelung Estates.
One
resident of the development was repeatedly
awakened by the screams of a child in the night.
Each time she went to her daughter's room she
found the child sleeping soundly. Later. after
falling asleep on the sofa, she was awakened by
what sounded like children's blocks being dropped
into a box. Again she checked her child's room.
As before, she found nothing but a sleeping
child.
Another
resident had a similar experience, but each time
she checked on her children, she found that the
night light in the bathroom had been turned off.
At the time that the incidents occurred, she
believed that her children were responsible.
Finally, she entered her oldest child's room and
demanded that the tricks be stopped. The child
awoke, protesting her innocence, and then asked
if she could please sleep somewhere else, because
someone kept pushing her out of bed.
Several
other families in the development have also
experienced this "Child Ghost of
Amelung" - possibly the ghost of the child
whose bones were unearthed and examined at site
of the New Bremen cemetery.
