Ghosts of the Iowa Great Lakes
by Bruce Carlson

By now, Herb had automatically pulled back on the reins of his team enough that both horses came to a complete standstill. Those horses snorted a bit as if to ask why they were stopping right there for no reason.

The Leppers, however, sure didn't have any time to be explaining things to their horses. That man shaped mass of whispy, yet very visible smoke was walking out of timber right for the team.

Emma said later that she was sure she didn't draw a breath for a full half-minute as she was so shocked at what she saw. Neither of the couple said a word to each other as they sat in wide-eyed amazement at what they saw.

The figure didn't even hesitate as it approached the horses. It strode right on through them! Both Herb and Emma saw that thing walk through those horses like they weren't even there. They could see the figure's head and shoulders above the horses and its legs below. For a couple of instants the trunk of the man's body was hidden as it walked through those horses.
