| Ghosts of the Amana
Colonies by Lori Erickson Dying is bad
enough, but what if you didn't even realize that
you were no longer alive? This story told by a
man in West Amana describes a ghost who is
confused indeed.
It seems
that a group of men had gotten together in one of
their homes to play cards one evening, the day
after a man who lived in another part of the
house had died. The men were having a good time
talking and laughing as they played, when
suddenly they heard a knock on the door.
"Come
on in," the host of the party called, not
even bothering to look up from the game.
The door
slowly opened and there on the threshold stood
someone they all recognized: the man who had just
died the day before, looking dazed but fully
alive.
Naturally
all the card players were surprised to see him,
but they couldn't deny the evidence of their own
eyes. They stared in amazement at the dead man,
and the dead man looked confusedly back at them.
Finally, the dead man spoke.
"Who
are you?" he blurted out, a question which
surprised the men even more, for they'd all lived
in the same village together their entire lives.
No one
had the gumption to answer the ghost, however,
and then the dead man walked past the table where
they were sitting and out the door on the other
side. The men sat there stunned for a short
while, until finally they got up the nerve to
search the house from top to bottom for some
explanation of what they had seen. Nothing
out-of-the-ordinary could be found, however,
Now this
may be a ghost story, or it may be the story of a
group of men who've had a bit too much to drink
along with their card playing.
