Ghosts of Galena

The
Ghost of the Railroad Man--Revisited?
Could
the ghost of the railroad man, as reported by the
Gazette in 1907, still be with us today? We
wondered, particularly when the following tale
came to us from a motorist who experienced
something while driving around Horseshoe Mound.
Everyone
familiar with Galena knows where Horsehoe mound
is. It's that large horseshoe-shaped hill just
east of town, around which U.S. Highway 20 winds
before descending into Galena. Many are the weary
travelers who rejoice when they round that curve
and see the quaint houses and church steeples in
the valley below.
Well,
one day Bruce and his friend were coming around
the mound on their way home. They had done it a
hundred times before and nothing unusual had ever
happened. But this time was incredibly different.
As they rounded that curve, Bruce saw a human
face and body materialize and hover outside the
windshield of his car! It was not a distinct
face--someone that they could identify--but it
was definitely a human face. It had not only a
head, but legs and arms; and it appeared to be
sort of a smoky-gray color. It hovered in front
of the windshield and then flew up over the car,
disappearing as mysteriously as it had appeared!
Neither
individual in the car knew if the other had seen
the same thing, until one said to the other after
a few moments: "Did you see that?"
"Yes!" was the immediate response. Both
had seen the very same thing. Neither had ever
experienced such a thing, either before or since.
And neither has an explanation.
Could
Bruce and his friend have seen the railroad man,
looking for his train? Or was it simply, as some
might suggest, light reflecting off the
windshield? You be the judge.
