With all the alleged haunting across the road at the Rectory, surely it would be
unreasonable to expect there to be even more at the church, but this is where one would be
wrong.
The legendary nun has been seen several times in the churchyard, also the ghost
believed to be that of a teenaged girl dressed in blue. Some people have also claimed to
have seen a veiled woman near to the church, whether she and the nun are one and the same
it is difficult to be sure.
Inside the church itself, there are areas which have the reputation of suddenly
becoming cold and with a feeling of tension around them. There is
a story of a young boy who, with his parents, was visiting the church. As they were
walking up the aisle, the boy suddenly stood rigidly still as if frozen to the spot,
stared straight ahead wide eyed and after what seemed an age, he burst into tears and ran
from the church. His parents tried to get him to explain what had happened, but all he
would say was "so cold".
There have been reports of people hearing the organ being played when there has been no
organist present and at other times when the church has been locked. Odd sounds have often
been heard within and reports of ghostly figures having been seen for split seconds.
In 1980, two psychic investigators were sitting quietly in the church, when suddenly
they both saw the figure of a tall man dressed in black old-fashioned clothes manifest and
slowly walk along the aisle. They decided to try to find out who he might have been. After
months of research they came to the conclusion that he was John Deeks, the vicar at the
time of Cromwell.
The same researchers believe that the two nuns often seen in the vicinity of the church
could well be Arabella Waldegrave and her mother Henrietta. Henrietta died in 1730 whilst
working as a spy for the then Government and was buried at Langenhoe. Arabella was
murdered in 1697 spying for the Stuarts, the opposite side to her mother. The whereabouts
of her grave is not known, but it seems that their spirits are now re-united and have
returned to the family church. |
