Ghosts & Legends of Wales, J.A. Brooks, 1987, photos, biblio., 144 pp. $8.95

A ghostly opera diva who hummed music at the workers who disturbed her grave. A man who still seeks the doctor who killed his wife and child--and whose bones may be found up the chimney. The ghost of a murdered girl who appears in different disguises--as a lady in silk, as a ball of fire, or sometimes as a half-naked, wailing spirit.

Haunted Clwyd, Richard Holland, 1992, line art, biblio. 139 pp. $9.95

Fascinating stories--both traditional and contemporary from the north eastern corner of Wales. Clwyd, the "gateway to Wales" is a gate to a strange land haunted by white ladies, red ladies, ladies in black, ghostly princes and peasants, prelates and pigs, and nameless, shapeless things... A huge ghost in golden armor striding out of a burial mound at Mold, where a gold-clad skeleton was later unearthed. The ghost of a walled-up servant who spoiled the bread at the bakery where he died. A sinister, chuckling phantom who haunted a trunk.

The tale that did it for me was the ghost of the pirate Dolphyn buried up to his neck at Tresillian Cave and left to drown. His screams are heard on New Years Eve. The Gwrach y Rhibyn--a "leathern winged hag with matted hair, glaring eyes, and spindly arms" who predicts death with her banshee-like shrieks. The cruelly deformed Frog Lady of Llandaff who was drowned in the River Taff. The deceptively named Greenmeadow--site of a Damned Spot where men and dogs are found dead with terror frozen on their faces.

Welsh Ghostly Encounters, Jane Pugh, 1990, biblio., 135 pp. $9.95

You won't find this great book in any other catalog in the U.S. The Dogs of Darkness of Wepre Park, the terrifying and gruesome spirit of Esther the suicide who walks the lane with her half-severed hand dripping blood, the annual ghost-walk of pirates and shipwreck victims along the sands to Llanfaglan Churchyard. Well-told and unusual stories!
