The Ghosts of Virginia, Vol. II, L.B. Taylor, Jr., 1994, photos and line art, 381 pp. $13.95

I don't see when Taylor sleeps--he just barely came out with the first volume! Mostly new stories with about 10% excerpted from his other books. The restless ghosts of John Wilkes Booth and the other Lincoln conspirators. The ghost who helped a couple escape a fire in their house. Civil War ghosts at the Wayside Inn. The moaning ghost of Buckhill Cave at Natural Bridge. Many stories from historical houses and plantations open to the public.

The Ghosts of Virginia III, L.B. Taylor Jr., 1996, photos and line art, 446 pp $14.95

I just about jumped out of my skin when I unwrapped the review copy: the cover photos showed a skull and what looked like baby heads! Fortunately they were just dolls from the Williamsburg Doll Factory—I think. Taylor has outdone himself again with this superb collection. The many hauntings of Edgar Allan Poe. The soft-spoken ghost of Rommel, "The Desert Fox," at the Highland Inn, surrounded by the scent of his favorite tobacco. The phantom bear of Ivon. The vanishing Stone House of Manassas. There are just too many good stories here to describe!

The Hauntings of Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, Jackie Eileen Behrend, 1998, photos, index, 192 pp $9.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Behrend runs the entertaining and educational "Haunted Williamsburg Tour," which my daughter and I took when we visited Williamsburg. As you might expect, there’s lots of history in this volume. Behrend emphasises the area’s little-known Civil War history: the bloody Battle of Williamsburg, where 4,000 men died; the field hospital in the Greek Revival Baptist Church—maimed soldiers still roam the ground where it once stood; the gallant ghost of Lt. Disoway at Palmer House, where he was shot while protecting the ladies of the house. The Revolutionary history of the area is not neglected either, with stories about ghastly noises from Cornwallis’s Cave, the Peyton Randolph House, haunted by the curse of the runaway slave, Eve. Phantom mourners at Grace Episcopal Church. And Williamsburg’s Raleigh Tavern, where ghostly parties were experienced by witnesses a century apart.
