Orson Welles' Ghost Story [Return to Glennascaull], 1951, B&W, 30 min. SORRY, NO LONGER AVAILABLE.
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Narrated by and starring Orson Welles. Newly restored with an intro by Peter Bogdanovich

Shot on location while Welles was taking a break from filming Othello, this is a tale "straight from the haunted land of Ireland" about a young man and the two mysterious women he drove home one night. All light and shadow, odd camera angles, and haunting harp music. Some of the acting seems rather wooden and the older woman has a strangely flat voice, whether by design or not, I couldn't tell. This was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Subject in 1953. An interesting curiosity.

I watch very little TV so this video was a treat, especially the parts with "real" ghost photos and videos. (There are some re-enactments and the inevitable smoke machine, but it's mostly in good taste.) Barry Taft discusses "The Entity" case, complete with photos of what may be psychic energy. Sarah Estep, a motherly medium, demonstrates Electronic Voice Phenomena. (Personally I didn't think the phraseology and accent recorded in Westminster Church sounded 18th century). Manressa Castle, with its "energy vortex" in the turret as well as the ghosts of a woman who fell from the window and a Jesuit priest who hung himself. Spirit rescue at Scotland's Stirling Castle, ghostly Confederate soldiers at Point Lookout, and a fascinating interview with the Doretta King family (see The People in the Attic on p. 31). See if you can spot who/what was responsible for most of the manifestations. The segment on the ghosts of Alcatraz was, to me, the least plausible, although I don't doubt that the prison is haunted. Psychic Peter James, who claimed to know nothing about the history of the Rock, walked through the fortress, pinpointing places with vague generalities like "I'm trapped here....I'm forced to comply with their rules and regulations...I sense killing here." Way too general and impossible to prove, except until he went into the utility tunnel where three inmates died in an escape attempt. There James gave a name and some initials, which--amazingly!--tallied with the historical facts. Impressive, but not if he had done his homework. Still, this tape gets a two-severed-thumbs-up rating.

The brooding Cornwall coast, an uncannily cold room, the sound of a woman sobbing, and a young girl whose life and soul are threatened by a vengeful ghostÉ

Called "Quite probably the movies' best ghost story," by William K. Everson, Classics of the Horror Film.

Thanks to the help of several readers, I ran down this much-requested title at last. You may wish I hadn't... Desolate Eelmarsh House surrounded by sea mists, a brave, yet terrified, young solicitor, and a horrible death re-enacted over and over... What does the woman in black want? An agonizingly suspenseful film and a crushing ending.
