Hauntings Across America, hosted by Michael Dorn ["Worf" from the Star Trek series, 1996, 60 min. $24.95

I really enjoyed this video! Yes, there are re-enactments, but I found them understated and frightening. [With the exception of unidentified segments from what appear to be old films.] Go ghost-to-ghost, starting with a look at Hollywood Haunted by author Laurie Jacobson (see p. 10). You'll visit Marilyn Monroe's crypt, George "Superman" Reeves' house, and an estate once owned by Jean Harlow and her suicide husband, Paul Bern, who was seen by the late Sharon Tate--along with a glimpse of her own horrible murder.

Then visit the Winchester Mystery House, or a decaying hacienda where a dead woman still walks, or an ordinary house where a cameraman was nearly hung by a hostile entity. A debunking segment about the S S Constellation, the story of "little girl lost" at Waverly Mansion, "The Commander" at an airfield in Kansas, and a weird story of a peeping pedophile in the Cambridge Y locker room are some of the other excellent stories. Interviews with Dr Barry Taff, Daniel Cohen, Arthur Myers, and witnesses to ghostly events are, for the most part, low-key and credible. Much of the footage--of strange "bullets of light" and an intriguing photo from The MyrtlesÑwas new to me. Very highly recommended!

Hollywood Haunting, Secrets of the Unknown series, narrated by Edward Mulhare, 1989, 30 min. SORRY, NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

Did Jean Harlow, John Wayne, and Harry Houdini really try to make an unearthly come-back? Mulhare [Of TV's The Ghost and Mrs. Muir] does his made-for-TV best to be slightly sinister. Entertaining but superficial. Interviews with parapsychologists and ghost witnesses. Interesting segment about John Wayne's haunted yacht.

The Innocents, 1961, Deborah Kerr, B&W, approx. 99 min. SORRY, NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

The classic, based on Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw," is a haunting study of innocence and corruption. Are Miles and Flora possessed by the depraved Quint and Miss Jessel? Or is it all just some projection on the part of the love-starved governess (Kerr). Full of subtle and not-so-subtle images of nastiness—both visual: a chained statue in the rookery; a beetle crawling out from between the lips of a statue; and audible: the buzz of flies, the whirl of pigeons, children's laughter with a diabolical edge. Gorgeous effects of light and shade. Of the three versions of this story I've seen, this is the most terrifying.

The Lady in White, 1988 113 min., CC SORRY, NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

Despite a made-for-TV quality, this is a screamer! Creepy-eyed Frankie gets locked in his school on Halloween night by his pals. There he witnesses a harrowingly realistic ghostly murder. The little girl ghost seems to have understudied for Annie, but along with the hoke and sentiment, there are some shocking moments.
