Ghost Breakers, Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, 1940, 85 min. B&W THIS VIDEO IS NO LONGER IN PRINT. ASK US TO FIND A USED COPY.

Ghouls and gags! Hope is a hapless radio announcer who accidentally gets involved with a murder. Goddard is the heiress who helps him stow away on a Cuba-bound steamer. In exchange, Hope promises to help her rid her inherited castle of the ghosts who seem to want their shares of the real estate and, incidentally, of a mysterious buried treasure. Even though this is a comedy, the mouldering body in the glass coffin scared me silly as a kid. The organ that makes the ghost walk is a great note!

The Ghosts of Chicago, Richard Crowe, 1985, approx. 90 min. $27.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
This excellent video bus tour of Chicagoland haunt-spots is hosted by ghosthunter Richard Crowe, who has the most marvellous voice. After a quick introduction to the types of ghosts and why they haunt, Crowe takes us right to tales of Resurrection Mary, the demon baby of Hull House, ghost lights, John Dillinger, Mt Carmel and Bachelor's Grove Cemeteries and much more. Crowe brings us witnesses who have danced with Resurrection Mary and driven her home. He shows us photographs of strange misty shapes and faces taken by unsuspecting photographers. All fascinating and quite believable stuff. TO ORDER: FOLLOW THIS LINK: http://www.ghosttours.com/ghostvid.htm

Grave Secrets: The Legacy of Hilltop Drive. 1992, approx 94 minutes. Patty Duke, David Soul and David Selby, CC THIS VIDEO IS NO LONGER IN PRINT. ASK US TO FIND A USED COPY.

This made-for-tv movie was inspired by a very scary (and unfortunately out of print) book: The Black Hope Horror. Patty Duke and David Soul do an excellent job as the Texas couple who bought a house built on a graveyard. Are the ghosts of the people buried there taking their revenge? Subtle and stylish visual touches--like the shadow of a snake on the wall behind Duke or something nasty dripping from the ceiling--make this a cut well above the usual TV ghost story.

The Haunting, Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn, 1963, approx. 1 hr. 52 min. B&W $24.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Still one of the most terrifying ghost movies available. No slashers in hockey masks, just intensely subtle psychological terror. I'm still haunted by the scene where Harris thinks she is holding Bloom's hand as something mutters in the background. Based on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.
