The Goblin, A True Tale of the Paranormal, William Owens,1996, 286 pp, Now out of print. See www.invink.com/used.html for a nice used copy.

This is the story of the Bell Witch, a malicious entity who first seemed to be a poltergeist generated by Elizabeth (Betsy) Bell. The creature then took on a sinister life of its own—possibly poisoning Betsy’s father. Owens calls the Thing the "Bell demon" and "the goblin" and believes neighbor Kate Batts was the true witch in the case. A weird, and somewhat repetitious book—because the case is reviewed from the testimony of several different witnesses—this is a valuable collection of original source material. Parts of this work are taken verbatim from the now out-of-print An Authenticated History of the Bell Witch, by M.V. Ingram. All of the "goblin’s" words are "true and unaltered, as recorded by the Bell family in their recollections and memoirs—which should provide a treat for any linguists in the audience who would like to analyse their content for clues to the "demon’s" identity. My only problem was figuring out what was real (Did Betsy Bell really made this statement under oath?) or whether Owens was writing up family materials in this fictionalized format. I still don’t know the answer.
