NOTE: Ghosts are controversial subject matter and may not be suitable for all communities. Please discuss this with me before booking.

OHIO—THE HAUNT OF IT ALL: How does a person who is terrified of ghosts become a real-life ghostbuster? A sampling of hauntings around the state, including some from your backyard. For all kinds of groups grades 5 and up.

200 YEARS OF GHOSTS: A talk written for Ohio's Bicentennial celebration, this covers historical hauntings around Ohio from Adena to Zoar such as the Native American ghosts at Gnadenhutten, ghosts at Underground Railroad sites, spirits at Ft. Meigs and much more. For high school age and up.

GHOSTS THAT HAUNT ME: A selection of my scariest ghostly encounters: A violent inmate of a former lunatic asylum, a permanent prisoner in a sinister penitentiary, the sobbing ghost of a murdered wife, Ohio's REAL Hatchetman, a smothering ghost at an Underground Railroad stop, the ghosts of 96 murdered Indians at Gnadenhutten, the headless motorcyclist of Elmore, and a horrific vision of a skull that predicted a man’s death. This talk is only for 7th grade and up.

FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE: A lighthearted look at how I became a writer, ghosthunter, and self-publisher. This is a favorite with Power of the Pen groups.

SELF-PUBLISHING SECRETS: A realistic look at self-publishing including many valuable practical tips for those of you who may be considering the self-publishing option. Also "How to Write and Market a Ghost Book" for class projects, fund-raisers, etc. Only for adult teaching professionals and librarians.

GRAVE MATTERS: A history of burial customs and death folklore. From the death-pits of Ur of the Chaldeas to the American way of death. Why we hold our breath when passing a cemetery and why iron was the material of choice for graveyard fences.

GHOSTS OF THE DEAD AND FAMOUS: A survey of some famous and infamous Ohioans who had encounters with the unseen world. Includes our haunted presidents and much Ohio history. Recommended for historical societies rather than schoolchildren.

GHOSTLY STORYTELLING: A sampler of ghost stories, old and new, folklore and true.

BUCKEYE BIGFOOTS AND OTHER SPECTRAL ANIMALS: Bigfoot in Greene County? Sea serpents in Lake Erie? From giant frogs to ghostly kangaroos, weird and ghostly animals around the state.

Most of these programs can be tailored for any age level from grades 5 and up and can be edited from 30 minutes to an hour or more. I always include examples of local ghost stories and leave plenty of time for audience questions and sharing. A typical talk is 30-40 minutes + 15 minutes of questions. When presenting a program in school, I   require signed permission slips from parents or guardians. This helps head off controversy and unpleasantness.

FEES: $400 per talk if I am allowed to sell my books and other materials. $600 per talk if personal sales are not allowed. This means if the Friends of the Library want to handle sales and take a percentage, the fee will be $600. All-day school visit fees will depend on the number and type of talks/workshops desired. I can do up to 4 talks/presentations per day. Please e-mail me at invisiblei@aol.com for fees.

If the site of the visit is more than 100 miles roundtrip from Beavercreek, OH [Greene Co., near Dayton] mileage of .25 per mile will be charged. In certain  circumstances, the booking party will also need to provide overnight lodging in a hotel or motel. These travel expenses can be reduced by coordinating a visit with another nearby school, library, or organization.

SOME TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL OR LIBRARY VISIT

  1. After you decide on a time and date, send me a letter of confirmation and a detailed map or directions to the site. Or you can fax it to (937) 320-1832. Please follow up with a phone call after faxing. And please be very specific about the number and type of talks you would like, as well as the number and age levels of the students or patrons I will be addressing.
  2. Once I have your letter in hand, I will send you some publicity materials. If you are a school, an order form/announcement form must be duplicated and sent home to parents about a week before my visit. A copy of this form is included below. Please feel free to download it, fill in the date of my visit, and reproduce it.  Students can then return the form with any order money to their homeroom teachers. Sending this entire form home is a requirement for my school visits. If order forms/permission slips are not sent home with the students in advance I will not be able to speak. Libraries will not need the form.
  3. I like to arrive a bit early at schools and sign books for these pre-sales, which can then be returned to the homeroom teachers for distribution. This reduces congestion after my talk. It is helpful to have someone "direct" traffic for me (e.g. get students to line up) so I can give full attention to the students.
  4. If sales are permitted during a visit, I will have the following items for sale: Haunted Ohio, Haunted Ohio II, Haunted Ohio III, Haunted Ohio IV (Haunted Ohio series paperback only, $11.00 each), Haunted Ohio and BOO-centennial  t-shirts (Adult sizes S, M, L, XL, XX, 3X, $14.00), and Haunted Ohio posters ($1.00).  I will also have available Ghost Hunters' Guide to Haunted Ohio, $15.00 and my new book, Haunted Ohio V: 200 Years of Ghosts, $13.00 PB and $22.00 HB.
  5. I provide free bookmarks for all attendees and free posters for all educators. I am happy to autograph bookmarks, depending on the students’ schedules. I can also pre-autograph large quantities of bookmarks for schools or libraries, although the students usually like to watch me sign.
  6. I usually handle book, poster, and t-shirt sales myself on the day of the program. I bring my own change box and am equipped to handle credit-card sales.
  7. If you have had problems with censorship/book challenges, please discuss this with me before booking. Ghosts are a controversial subject. I have had strong protests from parents who have objections to the supernatural. Usually requiring permission slips from parents will get around this objection.
  8. I am happy to speak to a classroom of students or a whole-school assembly. I prefer to speak in a smaller room such as a library, rather than an auditorium or cafeteria. If I am to speak at a public library, I cannot do so in the main part of the library while the library is open. I need to either speak in a separate room or, if there is no separate room, while the library is closed.
  9. I have a very soft voice, so I must have a good sound system. This is a requirement for my visit. I like a microphone on a cord that I can hold in my hand, rather than one that is permanently attached to the lectern since I am short and often cannot comfortably reach a fixed microphone. Cordless microphones get tangled in my hair and make strange sounds.
  10. Other suggestions: It is nice to have a lectern to hold my notes and one or two 6- or 8-foot tables to display my books, posters and t-shirts. A big glass of water is also appreciated.
  11. I appreciate having help in carrying in my materials.
  12. I am thrilled to have your suggestions on what you would like me to talk about.
