Aviation Ghosts : South by Southeast 165 Degrees, Kevin Desmond, maps, illus., 224 pp $36.95 HB UK IMPORT
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Fascinating RAF and aviation hauntings. "Intrigued that so many airstations, some with household names such as Lindholme, Cardington and Hendon, lay in a straight line bearing South by South East 165 degrees, Devin Desmond decided to investigate further. His ensuing journey, described in this book, more than justified his curiosity and unearthed a disturbing number of seemingly inexplicable incidents." Military Aerodromes/Airfields listed in index: Abingdon, Acaster Malbis, Andover, Banff, Bawtry, Benson, Bentley Priory, Biggin Hill, Burn, Cardington, Castletown, Coltishall, Dalcross, Dallachy, Dalton, Drem, East Fortune, Eshott, Farnborough, Goosepool, Gullane, Hatfield Woodhouse, Hernswell, Hendon, Henlow, Hylton, Kenley, Leuchars, Lindholme, Marston Moor, Middleton St. George, Montrose, Old Warden, Ouston, Polington, Rufforth, Scampton, Skipton-on-Swale, Swinderby, Syerston, Tadcaster, Thickwood Colerne, Tholthorpe, Tiree, Turnhouse, Upper Dysart, Usworth, Waddington, West Fenton, Wickenby

Battlefield Ghosts, B. Keith Toney, 1997, 124 pp, Sorry, this book is no longer available. Please ask us to find you a nice used copy.
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Modern-day reenactors take orders from a Civil War lieutenant: was he a real survivor of the Ft. Pulaski assault? Did modern schoolboys meet the famous Irish Brigade at Antietam? Is Mad Anthony Wayne still trying to turn the tide of battle at Brandywine? As an historian, storyteller and battlefield guide Toney is well-qualified to write this book. Even though he himself hasn't seen a ghost, Toney's wife was witness to the famous 17-mile-long wagon train marking the Confederates' retreat from Gettysburg that blood-soaked summer night. This is arriving just in time for the Spring Supplement so I haven't seen it yet. But it sounds like fascinating new material!

Civil War Ghost Stories & Legends, Nancy Roberts, 1992, photos, 183 pp. $9.95 PB
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
From Nancy Roberts, a terrific book that every Civil War buff will want. In one story, a man walks back a century into the scene of his Great-great-grandfather's death. There are also the ghosts of Confederate prisoners at Johnson's Island prison camp who still sing "Dixie" and the ghost of a hideously mutilated Union officer at Vicksburg who asked that his murderer not be punished.

Civil War Ghosts, Daniel Cohen, 1999, photos, biblio, 104 pp $4.95 .
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Written for young adults but certainly of interest to anyone fascinated by the haunts of America's bloodiest war.. A horrible ghostly stench at the site of the notorious Andersonville prison camp. The luminous lady of Ft. Monroe, shot by her husband in a jealous rage. The sad ghost of Mary Surratt, perhaps unjustly hung for a role in the plot to kill Lincoln. The ghosts of the Irish Brigade, still chanting their ancient Irish war cry on the fields of Antietam.

Civil War Ghosts of Virginia, L. B. Taylor Jr., 1995, photos and line art, index, 240 pp. $13.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
If you're a regular reader of Invisible Ink, you know my fondness for Mr. Taylor's books. You'll find horrors like "The Footless Wraith of Kenmore," "The Restless Casualties of Ball's Bluff," "The Ghost with Stonewall Jackson's Arm," and "The Man with No Heart." My blood chilled just reading the table of contents!

Echoes of Valor, Nannette Morrison, 1995, photos, 184 pp. $14.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Could the mindset needed for historical re-enactments send the living back in time? These great stories suggest so, telling of present-day visitations by Civil War soldiers, modern-day people who have relived their lives--and deaths--as Union or Confederate soldiers. Includes five recent, never-before-published photos of "ghosts" of Civil War soldiers--which, frankly, I have difficulty seeing. But the stories are astonishing--a farmer who had a battle erupt around him as he cut wood on his property, the many mysterious soldiers seen by reeancters while filming Gettysburg, including a ghost who gave his last round of ammunition to a modern-day man.
