The first in the series of books on haunted English RAF bases. Tales of phantom aircraft, haunted control towers, nissen huts where ghostly pilots still laugh and talk. "It is not possible to kill an airfield by taking down the huts and digging up the runways." Halpenny, a genuine Character who uses a lot of "...!", has dug up some gripping yarns...! I'll list the bases in each because some of you readers may have either visited or served at them. Each book has different stories, including updates sent in by readers for stories told in previous volumes. RAF Acaster Malbis, Aldergrove, Bassingbourn, Binbrook, Bircham Newton, Blyton, Boscombe Down, Bottesford, Brize Norton, Croydon Aerodome, Culham, Davidstow Moor, Digby, Elsham Wold, Fiskerton, Gatow, Grove, Gutersloh [Germany], Hawkinge, Hawarden--site of a heavy-breathing jilted ghost; Hemswell, Hornchurch, Kelstern, Kimbolton--where a phantom crew plays cards in a crashed B-17, Kirton-in-Lindsey, Leeming, Lichfield, Lissett--home to the "Reaper's Bomber," a phantom plane of ill-omen; Ludford Magna, Manby, Manston, Metheringham--haunted by a beautiful young lady with RAF wings, no eyes and a smell of decay; Middleton St. George, Mildenhall--where a ghostly bi-plane told of a downed bomber crew; Montrose, North Weald--where a ghost still tries to complete an unfinished phone call; Odstock, Scampton, Skipton-on-Swale--where 4 airmen deserted after hearing the cries and moans of a phantom crew; South Carlton, Spitalgate, Squires Gate, Swanton Morley, Tempsford, Upavon, Waltham, Warboys, Warmwell, West Malling, and the RAF Museum at Cosford.
