The A-Z of Scottish Paranormal, Ron Halliday, 2001, biblio, index, photos, including some very mysterious ghost photos, 328  pp. $17.95 UK Import
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
"From the earliest times to the present day, the story of Scotland has been interwoven with tales and traditions of paranormal activity. Ancient legends of ghosts and ghouls, hauntings nad horror-from the handless spectre of Cawdor Castle and the White Lady of St Andrews, to the phantom stagecoach of Inverbervie and the Grey Man of Ben MacDhui. From all over Scotland, Ron Halliday has gathered together chilling examples of paranormal phenomena-like the Glenluce Devil and the Rerrick Poltergeist, tales of terror and possession reminiscent of The Exorcist. Dark secrets are uncovered, from the hills and glens of the Highlands to the dimly-lit closes of Edinburgh's Royal Mile; spectral trains, haunted castles, roads and hotels are investigated; and the strange exploits of some of the most enigmatic characters in Scottish history are revealed-including the infamous activities of Major Weir, the ghosthunting of William Linskill, the satanic powers of Aleister Crowley, and the occult investigations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."  The A70 abduction, the Flannan Lighthouse mystery, the last flight of Peter Gibbs, UFOs, ley lines, mediums, cannibalism in the Sawney Bean family, Thomas the Rhymer, cryptozoology, Loch monsters.

newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Grim, melodramatic stories of the atrocities of clan warfare: headless ghosts, people flung out of tower windows, the groans of the massacred--there seem to be no happy spirits in Scotland!

The multiple ghosts of Duntulm Castle. The banshee robins that herald death at Pitcaple Castle. Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness--two dungeons: in one a treasure, in the other--the plague.

Ghosts, Spirits, and Spectres of Scotland, Francis Thompson, 1973, art, 110 pp, $10.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
An interesting collection of mostly traditional Scottish ghost tales. Phantom funeral processions (with a reminder to never walk in the middle of the road for fear of encountering one.) A bather who had a nasty encounter with a ghost who planted her icy cold high-heeled shoe in the middle of his chest and proceeded to re-enact the drowning of her husband in his bath. A phantom tinker's encampment with ghostly caravans and campfires.

Beautiful line drawings and photographs of castles and keeps, galleries and glens. The mysterious Rosslyn Chapel where ghostly flames appear whenever a Sinclair is about to die. Meggernie Castle, haunted by the apparition of the upper half of a woman, mutilated by her murderously jealous husband. Fyvie Castle, with its multiple ghosts, including that of a starved woman whose bones were found in a secret chamber. Green, Grey, White, and Blue Ladies. Phantom pipers, Brownies, multiple ghosts of Mary Stuart and Bonnie Prince Charlie (they did get around….) WONDERFUL indexes by haunting type, by place, and a general index. If you’re drawn to the mysteries of Scotland, or if you’re planning a trip, this is an essential guide. 330 sites, from Shetland to the Borders, from Galloway to Grampian. Telephone, fax, web and e-mail listings, an excellent map. If you can only buy one comprehensive guide to the ghosts of Scotland, make this the one!

Another beautifully blood-chilling collection of "the frightening experiences of ordinary folk" from Adams, author of Haunted Valley. From a North Sea oil rig to a snooker club in Glasgow to an Elgin supermarket to Rosslyn Castle: these are a powerfully persuasive body of evidence for the reality of ghosts. The sheer volume of average witnesses—people without psychic axes to grind—is quite overwhelming. From black, brown, and grey monks to pink, yellow, black, grey, red, blue and, of course, green, ladies. "Cloddings"—poltergeist attacks and the "Trow" of the Shetland Windhouse, a nasty, shapeless grey mass that makes for one of Adam’s most terrifying stories. Ghostly gargoyles in Ayrshire, a skeletal soldier photographed at Culloden, a phantom printer at the Edinburgh Evening News, and a ghostly burning house seen by several witnesses at different times. This is an outstanding book!

This excellent book imported exclusively from the author in Scotland, features unusual Scottish tales of wraiths and Resurrectionists (body-snatchers). The Curse of the Gallows Tree o’ Mar. A phantom Victorian maid still in service at Pannanich Wells. An account of the Devil at Glen Derry worthy of the pen of M.R. James. Two phantom warriors on the Blackwater near Midmar who fight to the death when the victor buries the other in the marsh. That was quite enough for me. I’m a special fan of Scottish spectres, possibly because they’re so grim and ghastly (and I hate to think what that says about me…) A very satisfying book.

Scottish Ghost Stories (O'Donnell), Elliott O'Donnell, 1975, line art,, 179 pp. $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
O'Donnell has a particular ear for the nasty detail. A bathroom haunted by a murderess who reenacts the drowning of her husband, a woman who spent a hellish night watching the ghost of a Scotswoman loot the bodies of dead English soldiers---cutting a throat here, lopping off a finger there. A hideously decayed spirit in Edinburgh.

More haunted castles and battlefields, ghostly Viking longboats and Green Ladies than you can shake a sporran at! Over 250 locations are profiled. There are some fascinating speculations in the introduction about the nature of ghosts: Why they create cold spots, and why some dying spirits cannot move on. A council flat in Greenock, haunted by the apparition of a hairy beast with horns fighting an old man. The phantom "Clencher" of Aberdeen, who grabs her victims in the street, leaving tiny handmarks on their skin. "The Boring Walker" of Scone Palace, whose ghostly footprints echo on stone--even though the current room is floored in wood. Marion Ritchie, first landlady of The Cross Keys Hotel, who pushed a photographer down the stairs, breaking his leg.

Scottish Ghost Stories (Robertson), James Robertson, 1996, biblio, 268 pp $15.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
This is one of my favorite books on Scottish ghosts. More than just a collection of folklore and old tales, this includes modern, first-hand accounts of ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night. The Glasgow flat haunted by a blonde man in a red shirt who lay on top of two female tenants, apparently just longing for a living human touch. Buckholm Hill, site of terrible atrocities and the ravening Hounds of Hell.  The sinister Black Lady of Broomhill, the Indian mistress of Captain McNeil-Hamilton, who may have been murdered by him and buried in the garden. One owner saw a vision of a dark woman being battered to death with a candlestick by a man she later identified as the Captain from a photograph. The Lady still walks among Broomhill’s ruins, leaving in her wake an intense sadness and the smell of spices… . A flat in Cathcart where a woman saw a ghostly baby in a ghostly cot waving its tiny ghostly hand. . The benign Gray Lady of Glamis--in addition to the monstrous Earl Beardie and the other ghosts that haunt the Queen Mother's childhood home. Fresh, fascinating stories.

newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
From the author of the popular (and out-of-print) Scottish Ghosts, another ghoulish collection of over 200 hauntings from the Borders to Shetland. Haunted castles, pubs, inns, lighthouses, ships, hospitals, theatres, coalmines, restaurants and even toilets! The caped and distruptive spirit of a monk who haunts a modern supermarket, site of his pre-Reformation monastery, a furniture store haunted by the child victims of a dreadful cinema fire in Paisley, a prison where the gruesome spirit of a 84-year-old hanged man still lingers. GREAT stories!
