| Philadelphia Ghost Stories, Chilling, True Stories of
Haunted Places in the Most Historic City in America, Charles J. Adams III, 1998,
photos, biblio, 182 pp $11.95 |
 |
| Amazingly, this is the first comprehensive collection of
ghost stories from this historic city. Many of the spirits are historic ones, but Adams
also brings us up-to-date with new sightings of these Founding Phantoms. The Screaming
Woman at Fort Mifflin whose screams have brought Philadelphia police to investigate. The
Fort has other spirits too: Jacob, the Blacksmith; The Lamplighter; The Faceless Man. The
exploding "half-ghost" of Andalusia. Baleroy, the most haunted house in
Pennsylvania, where the Brown Monk and the owners mother and late brother have been
seen and where ectoplasmic images have been captured on film. Albert J, the phantom typist
of the Historical Society. My only complaint is about the one-sentence paragraphs, which
make me very jumpy and the (uncharacteristic for this publisher) misspellings. (Its
Isaac Asimov, please.) |

| Visit Suicide Ridge or meet a
ghostly legionnaire who played card tricks, or the nasty poltergeist who sprayed
mysterious liquids from the walls and ceilings of a house in Stroudsburg. You get the
feeling that any heart-shaped bathtubs in this area would be filled with blood. |
