Ghosts of Marietta, Connie Cartmell, 1996, photos, map, 96 pp. Sorry, this book is no longer available. Please ask us to find you a nice used copy.
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
I first chatted with Connie when she graciously allowed me to use one of her many stories from The Marietta Times. This is an excellent collection of her gentle-spirited investigations into the many haunted houses of Marietta, the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory. The Levee House Cafe, formerly a house of ill-repute, haunted by a man axed to death by his son. The ghostly scent of bacon at the Charles Bosworth House. "George," the gentlemanly former governor who haunts Alpha Xi Delta House at Marietta College. Great atmospheric photos, too.

Ghosts of the Ohio River From Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, Bruce Carlson, 2007, line art, 150 pp $10.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
An excellent collection of unusual stories from communities along the Ohio River. The old woman ghost of Coon Holler near Shadyside, Ohio—a classic phantom hitchhiker ghost still seen today. The ghostly image of a little girl that appeared in her favorite cup in Huntington, West Virginia. Dollar Bill, still riding the riverboats in search of the seven of clubs he needed to win his last game of five-card stud. A terrible stench and a terrifying moan in a basement in Marietta. A Cincinnati house where the former owner’s portrait lost its sour look after the couple restored the porch the way it had been. The devoted father who came to his son’s high school graduation from beyond the grave. A drowned man from Syracuse, Ohio who saved his girlfriend from the same fate. A ferry lost in time at Crown City, Ohio. A haunted wedding dress in Ashland, Kentucky. An unusual coffin built for a man who was afraid of the dark in Westwood, Kentucky. A ghostly one-legged heron on a river boat.  A phantom hanging man at Covington, Kentucky—the ghost of a horse thief strung up by irate farmers. A ghostly weaver who made Christmas a lot happier for a poor family at Portsmouth, Ohio. The East Liverpool, Ohio woman who saved her grandson with a flashlight—two days after her death. The house near New Martinsville, West Virginia haunted by ghostly pool players and a semi-naked wood nymph.

The Ghosts of Zoar, Vol. 1, Ann Swain & Betty O’Neill-Roderick, 2004, photos, map, 69 pp $12.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Gentle spirited vignettes from the sleepy little Tuscarawas County town of Zoar, site of  an experiment in communal living by religious refugees from Germany, the Society of Separatists of Zoar. From 1819 to 1898 they toiled industriously, digging part of the Erie Canal, making coverlets, tinware, stoves and harness and establishing The Zoar Hotel, which became a popular resort for the residents of Cleveland. In 1898 the Society disbanded and sold off their assets. But some believe that the spirits of Separatists still linger. Sites covered in the book: The Zoar Tavern & Inn, The Zoar Hotel, The Cobbler Shop B&B, The Cider Mill, The Boys Dormitory, Inn on the River, Bimeler House, Ghost Fields, The Zoar Cemetery, Cowger House, haunted dolls of Zoar. The authors operate Lantern Tours of the Ghosts of Zoar from April through October, visiting some of the sites in this book.

Ghosts, Too! The Supernatural in Ordinary Lives, Joanne Duke Gamblee, 2006, 144 pp, biblio $14.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)

Ghostly encounters in and around Troy in Miami County, by Troy resident Gamblee. Fascinating, first-hand, contemporary accounts like the real estate agent who felt that she was led to uncover a dead man’s lost treasure—a dead man who replayed his death to reassure his loved ones that he had died a natural death. The ghost of “William” at Around About Books, who dimmed the lights to verify that his name was William. A yarn-throwing spirit at Ewetopia Fiber Arts. Apparitions, mysterious voices, and moving items at The Miami County Visitors and Conventeion Bureau and Troy Main Street. An apparition at the Frings and Bayliff Funeral Home in Tipp City—possibly a former owner inspecting the remodeling. Strange doings at a house in Tipp City, including mysterious puddles of water, unearthly writing, and the ghostly scents of lilac, hot chocolate and cigar smoke. Several chapters discuss clairvoyants and mediums, also compare similarities between paranormal encounters and discuss theories of energy and the subconscious mind. The author states that her focus is  “to reveal how common supernatural encounters occur and how many authorities believe they happen at a deeper level of consciousness.”

Haunted Houses: Spooky Tales of Yellow Springs as told by Harold Igo, Harold Igo, 2001, 60 pp, photos, spiral bound, 7 x 8 ½” Sorry, no longer available. Please ask us to find a nice used copy for you.
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
This is an absolute model of what local history/ghostlore/folklore should be!  These are tales collected by local writer Harold Igo in and around the small Ohio village of Yellow Springs with annotations on local history, murders, scandals, folktales, etc. There are photos and maps of some of the haunted sites and the local characters involved. Such tales as “Walnut Street Terror.” “The Ghost of the County Jail” “The Senator Walks at Midnight” “Cut Throat in the Kitchen” “Story of the 7 Dachshunds” “The Headless Soldier.”  These are not predictable urban-legend type folktales, but rise out of true events and places in Greene County. They are a fascinating reflection of the local preoccupations, crimes and gossip in a small Ohio town in the 19th and early-20th century.

Uneasy Spirits: 13 Ghosts of Clermont County, Richard Crawford, 1997, line art, photos, index, 100 pp  SORRY! Now out of print. SEE ABOVE ITEM 1082 FOR THE REVISED EDITION.
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
I first met Rick Crawford when a colleague of his at the newspaper suggested I ask him about Clermont County ghosts. "He knows everything about the county," she assured me. And he did. Rick, who is Clermont County's official County Historian, took me on a roller-coaster ride through the hills, hollows, and history of Clermont. At every house, he seemed to know the date it was built, the most recent owners, and the brand of rat poison a previous owner had killed her family with. It was an astonishing performance and you'll be equally astonished at these ghostly tales from the haunted hills of Clermont County. The ghostly dog of Spate House. "Nellie" who appeared in the window of the Owensville Town Hall, complete with photo! The Shawnee sorceress of Smyrna Cemetery. Disoriented flood victims seen still crossing the road at Utopia.
