One More Story, Contemporary Seneca Tales of the Supernatural, (As told by DuWayne Leslie Bowen), 1991, line art, 48 pp. $9.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Contemporary true tales in the oral Seneca tradition. "The Swamp"--where a creature in a "high hat" seeks human flesh. "The Power Lines" about a murdered woman who came back as she promised for her daughter. Good stories!

Phantoms of the Hudson Valley, The Glorious Estates of a Lost Era, Monica Randall, 1995, photos, biblio, index, 206 pp 9 x 12" THIS BOOK IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. Ask us to find you a nice used copy.

We've been chewing our nails for two years waiting for this book and here it is at last! This is a picture book on a grand scale to match the magnificence of these once-grand estates. Beautiful, sepia-toned photos a la Simon Marsden and an evocative approach to these time-ravaged buildings. Randall clearly relishes the often eccentric characters associated with the Hudson Valley:
* Chanler Chapman, who amused his friends by spitting burning kerosene and gouging the eyes out of a portrait of his ex-wife.

* "The Mad Bishop" of Beechwood, who murdered five young women and bricked their bodies up in a dutch oven.

HOWEVER, ghosts play a very minor role here: only ten out of the twenty-eight sites described have even a hint of a haunting. The most detailed hauntings are at The Octagon House, built by a man who made his living reading personality from the bumps on peoples' heads. There, a drowned bride returns to haunt the gardens. Estherwood is haunted by a hideously pale woman who killed herself over her faithless husband. There's also the amusing story of Dr. Bernard, devoted to his beloved elephants, who may still haunt the site. A fascinating look at how the rich are very different from you and me (well, from me, anyway), but you may find that these ghosts flit by all too quickly.

Seeking Ghosts in the Warwick Valley, 60 Personal Accounts, Donna Reis, 2002, illus, 160 pp . $19.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Beloved as a pastoral paradise by weekenders and vacationers, beautiful Warwick, New York, is a historic, bucolic town laced with gingerbread Victorian homes and winding back roads that lead to many scenic hamlets. An artists community has grown up in the area, inspired by the natural beauty of the surroundings. However, all is not perfect in this seeming Paradise. In fact, many of the numerous bed and breakfasts that dot the valley are home to ghosts, as are a number of area restaurants. Herein are the stories of more than 60 chilling firsthand encounters with the supernatural by area residents. The spirits explored in these pages range from the benevolent who come to bid a loved one good-bye to tormented spirits, poltergeists, and vengeful Native American ghosts.

Spooks of the Valley, Louis C. Jones, facsimile of 1948 ed., line art, 111 pp. $11.95

This scared the heck out of me when I was a kid. On re-reading, it's just as scary! Set in a framework of two boys' search for Captain Kidd's treasure, this is a lively collection of traditional Hudson Valley ghost tales like "The Headless Horseman" and "The Vanishing Hitchhiker" told with a storyteller's flair. Remember Aunt Sally and her "Hand of Glory?"

Things That Go Bump in the Night, Louis C. Jones, 1983 [1959], line art, notes & sources, index, 208 pp. $16.95

Enjoyably chatty folktales from New York State like the scent of ghostly pancakes at Lindenwald, Martin Van Buren's retirement home. The house is also haunted by Aaron Burr who is seen walking in gale winds in the orchards, lace ruffles unmoving, and by Van Buren himself. The tone is so pleasant, you're terrified before you know it. This is a great book!
