Ghosts, Stories
of Spirits in New York States North Country, Lynda
Lee Macken, 2000, photos, biblio, 73 pp. $7.95 |
 |
| So much of this beautiful, yet rugged country looks haunted
that it was just wailing to be written about! Macken has taken on the challenge in
these short, yet fascinating ghostly tales that leave you eager for more. Many of
these ghosts are characters in local history still manifesting themselves today, possibly
with a touch of folklore. The spirit of Preston at The
Whiteface Club, Lake Placid, who hated change and still plays destructive pranks from
beyond the grave, The Pink Lady of Chapman Historical Museum, The ghost of drowned Grace
Brown, inspiration for An American Tragedy,
the castle-like Skene Manor, haunted by Catherine Skene, whose body was dug up and robbed
of her jewelry. |

| Ghosts Along
the Erie, Mary Ann Johnson, 1995, line art, 120 pp. $14.95 |
 |
 |
This attractive and interesting book features mostly
contemporary tales from the aptly name Erie Canal area in the Adirondacks. A haunted abbey
in Auburn (haunted by "holy ghosts," said the tenants). A ghostly female marine
whose head floated off her shoulders. "Old Stoneface"--a hideous ghostly figure
with horns, a hunch, and red eyes. The ghost who wanted her hats back--and levitated the
hat box for emphasis. |
