Adirondack Ghosts, Stories of Spirits in New York State’s North Country, Lynda Lee Macken, 2000, photos, biblio, 73 pp. $7.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
So much of this beautiful, yet rugged country looks haunted that it was just wailing to be written about! Macken has taken on the challenge  in these short, yet fascinating ghostly tales that leave you eager for more.  Many of these ghosts are characters in local history still manifesting themselves today, possibly with a touch of folklore. The spirit of Preston at  The Whiteface Club, Lake Placid, who hated change and still plays destructive pranks from beyond the grave, The Pink Lady of Chapman Historical Museum, The ghost of drowned Grace Brown, inspiration for An American Tragedy, the castle-like Skene Manor, haunted by Catherine Skene, whose body was dug up and robbed of her jewelry.

Ghosts Along the Erie, Mary Ann Johnson, 1995, line art, 120 pp. $14.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
This attractive and interesting book features mostly contemporary tales from the aptly name Erie Canal area in the Adirondacks. A haunted abbey in Auburn (haunted by "holy ghosts," said the tenants). A ghostly female marine whose head floated off her shoulders. "Old Stoneface"--a hideous ghostly figure with horns, a hunch, and red eyes. The ghost who wanted her hats back--and levitated the hat box for emphasis.

Back in print! Black Jenny, who paddles her ghostly canoe up the Owasco Outlet. A grey-shrouded horror that set its haunted house on fire, then tried to pull a firefighter into the inferno. A doctor's specimen skull whose eye-sockets lit up. Written for the canal town's Sesquicentennial.

Ghosts of Saratoga County, David Pitkin, 1998, maps, index, 225 pp We're sorry, but this book is now out of print. Ask us to find you a nice used copy.

This delightfully entertaining book of over 100 New York State ghost stories blends history and hauntings in a factual, yet winning style. The skull-faced ghost of Horse Race Rapids. A ghostly horse and coach at "Katherine’s House" whose arrival was followed by a ghostly Victorian couple who walked right through a pair of prospective buyers! "Old Jim" of Olde Dater Tavern, where the waitresses were instructed to leave the daily newspaper and a shot of whiskey on the bar. The next morning, the paper would be rumpled and the whiskey would be gone. Teacher and historian Pitkin, who modestly calls himself "a collector of stories," writes with a solid, non-sensational touch, making his eye-witness accounts all the more plausible. Highly recommended. And I can’t wait for the sequel!

Niagara's Ghosts at Fort George, Kyle Upton, 1999,maps, photos,139 pp. $10.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Sarahann, Irving, and the Woman in the Mirror are just a few of the ghosts you might meet if you take the Kyle Upton Ghost Tours of Niagara, or if you read this book. A ghost whose hob-nailed shoes struck ghostly sparks from the floor of a 70-foot tunnel at the Fort. The mischievous Irving, who moved a bucket of sand 12 feet away from the door it was holding open so he could slam it shut in response to a volunteer's challenge. A napping soldier ghost under a tree in the Commons. The ghostly little girl Sarahann, possibly the 7-year old daughter of a Sergeant-Major, seen by children and adults alike. A horrific evening when the Ghost Tour was packed with people and the Fort was packed with re-enactors--two people on the tour were struck violently on the face by something invisible! Excellent, contemporary accounts of very active ghosts.
