The Flaming Ship of Ocracoke & Other Tales of the Outer Banks, Charles Harry Whedbee, 1971, line art, 153 pp. $11.95 HB
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Every September, on the first night of the new moon, a flaming ship blazes past the coast of Ocracoke. No matter what the wind, she moves swiftly along her course, an unearthly wailing rising from her hold. Great tales from North Carolina's historic coastland like the British naval officer buried upright--eternally at attention, or a blasphemous supper party with a bloody aftermath.

The Uwharries (pronounced "You-warr-ees") are the remains of an ancient mountain range in what is now North Carolina. Fred T. Morgan, a journalist and native of Uwharrie country, has collected 20 tales from the Africa-American, German, and Scotch-Irish oral tradition. There's the story of the murderer victim who came back to re-live her fiery death. There's an alcoholic ghost, a farmer nearly carried off by ghosts in a big black cloud, and much more. All enhanced by wonderfully spooky wood-block illustrations by Virginia Ingram.

Haunted Asheville, Joshua P. Warren, 1996, photos, index, 173 pp $14.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Things die slowly in the mountains…as this leisurely tour of Asheville’s haunt-spots proves. Helen’s Bridge, where the ghost of a woman who hung herself after losing her daughter in a fire still swings. The phantom billiard player of Reed House. The Pink Lady of Grove Park Inn. Warren describes the electronic equipment used in these investigations and mingles fact with romantic speculation in a way that leaves you wanting more.
