This is a very frightening book. One theme stands out, that of crisis apparitions: ghosts who visit their loved ones to say, "I've just been killed in the mine." Folklorist Montell seems to suggest that these ghosts should be regarded as mere folklore motifs, which I think is disrespectful to beliefs far older than any system of folklore classification. That quibble aside, this book scared me a lot.

A big black ghost dog that solved a murder. The author's "Granny Harris" who came back to finish the dress she was sewing when she died. "Popular Foot," the dancing ghost. True stories in the tradition of "haint" tales for young adult or new adult readers

More Kentucky Ghost Stories, Michael Paul Henson, 1996, 180 pp $14.95

I loved this book! The half-ghost of a man cut in two by a train. "The Thing" that pinned a woman to a wall with an icy hand. Several dreadful ghostly re-enactments: a pioneer burning at the stake (a skeptic was later found hideously burned at the site) and a flood that destroyed a bridge and three small children. A ghostly "prison wagon," carrying runaway slaves back to their owners. One especially weird tale tells of a pilot who flew into 1778. Collected by Henson from traditional and contemporary tellers, this wonderful book features log cabins where blood-curdling screams are heard, eerie fireballs, and many haunted roads and bridges. It is a great tragedy that Henson passed on in March of 1995.

Tragedy at Devil's Hollow and Other Kentucky Ghost Stories, Michael Paul Henson, 1984, line art, 128 pp. $17.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Creepy, well-told tales from the hills and hollows. A ring that held the clue to a woman's murder, a bridge haunted by crying children, and strangest of all--two students from Lexington who wandered into 1879 and a feud at Devil's Hollow. Henson was a writer, storyteller, and expert on treasure hunting.
