Ghost Stories of Indiana, Edrick Thay, 2001, photos, 199 pp, $10.95

Indianapolis’ mysterious “House of Blue Lights”. The friendly spirit of Thomas Taggart, still making sure things run smoothly at the French Lick Springs Grand Hotel. The ghost of “The Gipper” spooking students at University of Notre Dame’s Washington Hall. Amelia Earhart returns to her old haunt, Purdue University. The horrible apparition of severed heads at a farmhouse near Valparaiso, the site of a gruesome massacre.

Haunted Indiana, Mark Marimen, 1997, photos, sources, 155 pp. $12.95

Until now, Indiana's ghosts had been confined to the dry pages of folklore journals. Marimen sets those ghosts free to wander, covering everything from traditional stories to contemporary sightings in an effortlessly evocative style which takes the reader back to those summers by the campfire when "perfectly true" things happened "right near here." The Cline Avenue ghosts: a Cudahee neighborhood version of La Llorona and a spectral Polish bride named Sophia who drowned herself when her groom left her waiting at the altar. The heavy-footed "Homer" who haunts the Hayloft Restaurant. Silas Shimmerhorn, the phantom hermit of Bat Cave. The Gray Lady of Willard Library, who had a ball held in her honor. This is a very fine collection of Indiana ghostlore and I hope to see more from the talented Marimen.

Hoosier Hauntings, K.T. MacRorie, 1997, line art, photos, ref. 158 pp. $12.95

There is surprisingly little overlap between these two books and quite a different treatment of the same stories. The trauma-filled Culbertson Mansion where the sad little ghost of Minerva threw herself off the stairs. Phoebe, the laughing ghost. Isaac, who encountered Death climbing into his bed. Stiffy Green, the ghostly bulldog. Captain McHarry, buried seated, with his eyes open, in a tomb overlooking the Ohio River. My favorite was about the ghostly B-58 pilot who headed back to the Alert Facility for debriefing at Grissom Air Reserve Base, leaving his footprints in the snow. Some of the haunted bridge stories here could have been trimmed; most of them are the same folktales simply translated to different locations. And I wish they had left out the amateurish illustrations. But "MacRorie" is quite a storyteller.
