Item no. 480 Chicken Skin: True Spooky Stories of Hawai’I, Rick Carroll, 1996, illus, 126 pp $14.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
The Dead are all around in Hawaii and this appealing book gives us 32 accounts by people who have experienced the inexplicable in Hawai’I. Real, contemporary stories of strange encounters with Madame Pele, the Night Marchers, ancient bones, and more. The rock that talked. A baby who played with the usually deadly Nightmarchers. Two of my favorites were the woman who got a guided graveyard tour—from a ghost. And a spirit who told his own story of haunted golf courses to a journalist during the PGA Grand Slam at Poipu Bay.
Please note that Chicken Skin is a trademark of Glen Grant.

Ghost Stories of Hawaii (Audio Tape) "A Message (Warning?) to Our Listeners: While every effort has been made to create a high quality tape, some strange errors have taken place in production. For example, somehow two tales on Side B of the audio appear out of sequence from the printed order! The professionals are puzzled how this mistake could have happened since the master tape was correctly sequenced. Therefore, we are not responsible for any unusual sounds or weird problems you may find on this tape. Good luck, listener."After an introduction like that, who could resist?

Side A: 1. An Introduction to Hawaii's Ghost Stories 2. In the Rock There is Life 3. The Phantom Hitch-hiker of Sandy Beach 4. The Tale of a Restless Spirit 5. A Picture Bride's Story
Side B: 1. The Mysterious Playmate 2. The Dead Walk at Laie 3. A Drowning in Waimea, July 28, 1952 4. Terror Comes in the Night 5. Do the Dead Return?

Ghostly Tales for Over the Pali: An Audio Tour through Hawaii’s Supernatural with Glen Grant, Glen Grant, 1996, approx 60 min NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
These are really good stories! Althought this started off with a rather conventional phantom hitchhiker child ghost, it picked up spooky speed fast with the Bridge at Kipapa Gulch where security guards quickly learn to ignore the screams they hear, a police office who chased a phantom, and the terrible faceless ghost at a drive-in.

Contents: Side A A Lost Child in Manoa, Haunted Makapu’u, A Phantom Hitchhiker at Kahuku, The Haunted House of Waimea Valley, Under the Bridge at Kipapa Gulch, The Soul’s Leaping Place at Ka’ena, Mysterous Lights at Makaha; Side B Restless Spirits at Kualakai, Faceless Ghost at ‘Ewa, A Strange Encounter at Salt Lake, Pork over the Pali, The Legend of Morgan’s Corner, In the Graveyard at Manoa

Hawaii’s Best Spooky Tales, True Local Spine-tinglers, Rick Carroll, 1997, art, maps, guide to spooky places, $11.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
True, contemporary spooky island stories related by a variety of eyewitnesses. The woman who kicked a heiau (temple) and was attacked by spirits who grabbed her ankles, cutting off her blood. Madam Pele, who confounded local officials by refusing to be evacuated during an eruption. A hairy-handed ghost who tried to choke a child at Hickham AFB. Some stories are told matter-of-factly while some tellers have a more dramatic style. The interest for me is how Hawaii’s "legends" carry over into today.

Oahu Spookies, AUDIOTAPE Jeff Gere, 60 min. $11.00

I'm listing this audio tape here instead of under "Voices from Beyond" because I don't want you to overlook it. These true contemporary ghost stories, told by a man with a thousand voices, are terrifying and emotionally harrowing. This is an extraordinary tape.

Contents: I Met a Man Who Met Pele, Shark's Cove, TuTus, When Kona Winds Blow, Teacher Tale, Lily: In the Roots of Ironwood Trees, Your Daddy One Shark

Oahu Spookies II: True Supernatural Tales from Hawaii & Samoa AUDIOTAPE retold by Jeff Gere, 1995, 60 min. $11.00
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
The little old lady who spooked a bus driver on the graveyard shift. A girl's favorite uncle who foolishly challenged the "Night Marchers"--and lost. An amazing tale about a stone that turned into a ghostly woman to prevent a double murder. More vocal wonder from Gere who can sound like an elderly Hawaiian goddess or a bus door.

Obake: Ghost Stories in Hawaii, Glen Grant, 1994, line art, 178 pp. $12.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Storyteller and folklorist Grant has collected vivid and haunting tales from islanders of all backgrounds. A lizard-woman who attacked a Japanese fisherman. Malevolent spirits who burned a family out of their haunted plantation home. "Calling spirits" who lure victims to their doom by knowing their name, and "choking ghosts"--the terror that comes in the night and sits on your chest. The only quibble I have is that some of these stories are composites of several cases, and a few are embellished for literary effect, but they are true in spirit to the many ghostly traditions of the islands.

Obake Files: Ghostly Encounters in Supernatural Hawaii, Glen Grant, 1996, photos, biblio, 277 pp $15.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Past and present blend uncannily in Hawai’I, just as they do in this outstanding collection of eyewitness sightings from individuals who have experienced the supernatural world of the islands. Modern appearances of Madam Pele, the Nightmarchers, shark spirits, vanishing hitchhikers, spooky fireballs, choking spirits, and much more. A collection of strange photos collected by Grant including a ghostly Hawaiian warrior on a cliff. The boy whose sister was taken by the Nightmarchers. A man who wasted away until he retrieved the bones he had carelessly buried under the lobby of a Waikiki hotel. Choking ghosts at the University of Hawai’i. The hairy arm and hand without a body at Papa’aloa. Use ti leaves for a bookmark with this one.
