13 Georgia Ghosts and Jeffrey, Kathryn Tucker Windham, 1973, photos, 154 pp. $13.00

Another in the captivating series of Jeffrey books. My favorite story tells of a woman who heard the ghostly chanting of long-dead friars and their Indian converts. When she tried to record the singing, the tape recorder caught on fire.

Banshees, Bugles and Belles: True Ghost Stories of Georgia, Barbara Duffey, 1995, photos, biblio, index, 132 pp, $15.00

Excellent collection of current sightings told factually and without melodrama. "Stella," the April Fool poltergeist of the St James vicarage. Col. Bond of Woodruff House, reassured by police Sgt. Pat Wood that she was just there to protect the house. The lovely dark-haired ghost, Sylvia, of Panola Hall, courted by a living Ohio millionaire who used to leave her love letters on his dresser.

One of my favorite stories, given my weakness for time-warps, was about The Homestead, where the present occupant attended an 1840s ball. There's also a photo of a "column of light" ghost on Peachtree St in Macon.

Georgia Ghosts, Nancy Roberts, 1997, photos, 267 pp $9.95

From well-known, traditional spirits: the sounds of the last dinner party at Bonaventure, moved to the lawn while the house burned down, to modern sightings: a ghostly woman in white spotted by Roberts herself at The Kehoe House. A phantom party spotted at the Savannah mansion of Jim Williams, central figure in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The horror of a spectral slave ship where ghostly slaves plunge to their deaths in the waters of Ebo Landing. The dead polo player of Cumberland Island. Roberts lists the addresses of many public places so you can visit or spend a sleepless night in a haunted house. Delightful!

F* Hook Moon Night: Spooky Tales from the Georgia Mountains, Faye Gibbons, 1997, drawings, 112 pp $15.00 HB

I am listing this enchanting book as fiction, although it’s really folklore for young adults. Presented in a fictional framework of a front-porch storytelling session, these are cautionary tales taken from local folklore like the woman who was buried alive. Or the boys haunted until they returned stolen Native American artifacts to their dead owner. Or the young boy who found his calling in life when a dead woman pointed the way. Using motifs from traditional haint tales, Gibbons weaves magic!
