This is a thorough, objective, and fascinating look at a
controversial case that I, for one, would very much like to be real. Two Edwardian ladies
exploring the grounds at Versailles wandered into the time of Marie Antoinette,
encountering the ghosts of the tragic Queen and members of her court. Or did they? Coleman
brings together all previously published accounts, including the original draft and
balances them with a selection of contemporary and modern critiques of the incident. Was
that sinister man in the kiosk really just a guest at a fancy-dress party? Was the
"sketching lady" really a man in women's clothes? Have there been subsequent
apparitions at the Trianon? See what you think. |
