An eternal card game in the Ocala area house where gangster Ma Barker and friends were shot by the FBI. Spook Hill in the Tampa area where cars roll uphill. The old soldiers of Pensacola Naval Base who refuse to die. The ghastly scent of phantom funeral flowers at Kixie’s Men’s Store in St. Augustine.

A Ghostly Experience: Tales of Saint Augustine Florida, Suzy Cain, 1997, illus., 50 pp $7.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Written by Tour Saint Augustine guide Suzy Cain, these are short snapshots of the many spooks of the oldest city in the US. The sick woman visited by a ghostly nun, praying for her recovery—and by the phantom soldier who marched her away to the afterlife. The spectral "Spanish cat," just one of many ghosts at Casa Horruytiner. The toothless ghost of Judge Stickney—victim of grave robbers looking for gold fillings—who roams the Hugenot Cemetery. I was very taken by the impressionistically spooky black-and-white illustrations.

Ghosts, Legends and Folklore of Old Pensacola, Sandra Johnson and Leora Sutton, 1994, photos and line art, sources, 48 pp. $4.95

This modestly produced little book contains mostly short ghostly folktales with a few other local stories thrown in. Pirate ghosts guarding their treasures. The armored ghost whose skeleton was found inside a hollow cypress tree. The Germania Hose Company ghost who put icy hands on the faces of the resting firemen. The three ghostly rectors of Old Christ Church who marched in their own funeral procession.

Ghosts of St. Augustine, Dave Lapham, 1997, line art, 154 pp $9.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Haunted not only by its history, St Augustine, the oldest city in America, can also boast ghosts like the Spanish soldier who still smelled of garlic and sweat centuries after his death. The home of Don Pedro, Spanish governor of Florida, haunted by a ghostly calico cat, a 17th century Spanish dandy in high boots and plumed hat, and a coffin that moves around by itself! There was also an untidy ghost who left behind crumbs on the floor and a bannister that oozed blood. Based on eye-witness reports, these are lightweight, entertaining accounts from a town that was over 200 years old when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Haunt Hunter’s Guide to Florida, Joyce Elson Moore, 1998, photos, notes, index, 168 pp $12.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
The first comprehensive look at Florida phantoms, this book is a pleasure to read and use, with its sections on each site’s history, haunts, how to visit, and directions. Chills, cigar smoke and the apparition of ghostly artist Andre Smith at the Maitland Art Center. Boca Grande Lighthouse, haunted by the headless victim of a pirate and a little girl playing jacks. The eccentric "Trapper" Nelson, snake collector and hermit, who haunts the site of his mysterious suicide at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. A "woman in white" photographed on the porch of the Kingsley Plantation house. Moore has obviously visited these places, sampled the local restaurants and local color, and that’s what makes this such an engaging book.

Oldest Ghosts, St. Augustine Haunts, Karen G. Harvey, photos, drawings, biblio, glossary, index $9.95

Take a ghost tour of the oldest city of European origin in the US. There you’ll meet Judge John Stickney, who perches on a tree limb above his cemetery monument. There you’ll see a Colonial-period ghost hanging laundry in a Spanish courtyard. The naughty ghost of swashbuckler Will Green who hung around Le Pavillion, waiting to take over the bodies of drunken men. A ghostly calico cat. The little girl ghost and ghostly footsteps at the St. Augustine Lighthouse and keeper’s house. Creepy, eyewitness accounts of Florida’s ghosts.
