One of the finest modern writers of ghost and horror stories. Westall writes of a pair of haunted spectacles that eerily transform the life of a young woman. The thing that writes vile graffiti inside a church—using the fluids from decaying bodies. Westall recently died and I'm saddened to think there will be no more stories.

I don't know what it is about Westall. He's so understated; yet he sucks you right into a world that is both normal and terrible. "Blackham's Wimpy:" a horrifying ghost story and incredibly evocative tale of aerial combat. (You'll taste, smell, and feel what it's like to be on a WWII bombing mission.) "The Cats," a claustrophobic story of animal ghosts out for revenge. "Woman and Home"—a creepy look at a different kind of seduction.

Wharton’s intricate prose spins a web around you before you know it. She notes that, "till I was twenty-seven…I could not sleep in a room with a book containing a ghost story…I have…had to burn books of this kind, because it frightened me to know that they were downstairs in the library." Don’t miss "The Lady’s Maid’s Bell."

Contents: The Duchess at Prayer (1901); The Fullness of Life (1893); A Journey (1899); The Lady’s Maid’s Bell (1904); Afterwards (1910); The Triumph of Night (1914); Bewitched (1926); A Bottle of Perrier (1930); The Looking-Glass (1935)
