JACKSON, Shirley, The Haunting of Hill House, 1959, 246 pp. $11.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Set in a house of absolute evil, this is subtle and disturbing fare. Jackson said that while she was writing it she had to read a chapter of Little Women every night before she turned out the lights. And one morning she found a sheet of copy paper moved to the center of her desk, "set neatly away from the general clutter. On the sheet of paper was written DEAD DEAD in my own handwriting." Still one of the most frightening stories I have ever read.

JAMES, M[ontague] R[hodes], Casting the Runes and Other Ghost Stories, Michael Cox, introduction and notes, 1987, 352 pp. $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Excellent and valuable explanatory notes for those of us whose ecclesiastical Latin is a little rusty and containing fascinating details of passages James deleted from final stories. This does not contain "Lost Hearts" or "The Ash-tree," which can be found in Ghost Stories of an Antiquary.

Contents: Introduction, Note on the Text, Select Bibliography, A Chronology of M.R. James, Canon Alberic's Scrap-book, The Mezzotint, Number 13, Count Magnus, 'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad', The Treasure of Abbot Thomas, A School Story, The Rose Garden, The Tractate Middoth, Casting the Runes, The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral, Mr. Humphreys and His Inheritance, The Diary of Mr. Poynter, An Episode of Cathedral History, The Uncommon Prayerbook, A Neighbour's Landmark, A Warning to the Curious, Rats, The Experiment, The Malice of Inanimate Objects, A Vignette, Explanatory Notes, Appendix: M.R. James on Ghost Stories.

JAMES, M[ontague] R[hodes], Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, with a new Introduction by E.F. Bleiler, 1971, illus., 153 pp. $4.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
The perfect introduction to the works of M.R. James. James told many of these stories to his friends over sherry on cold winter's nights at King's College, Cambridge where he was known as a brilliant medievalist, Biblical scholar, linguist, and paleographer. His antiquarian interest shines throughout his stories.

Contents: Canon Alberic's Scrap-book, Lost Hearts, The Mezzotint, The Ash-tree, Number 13, Count Magnus, "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad, The Treasure of Abbot Thomas

LEFANU, J.S., Best Ghost Stories of J.S. LeFanu, Edited and with an Introduction by E.F. Bleiler, 1964, line art, 467 pp. $9.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Joseph Sheridan LeFanu [1814-1873] is recognized as the greatest Victorian writer of ghost stories. At first I was put off by the archaic language and tone, but LeFanu's masterly handling of evil lured me to read further. I still shudder at "Madam Crowl's Ghost"!

MICHAELS, Barbara, Ammie Come Home, 1989 $6.99
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Start with a tranquil townhouse in Georgetown, add a ghostly scent of lilac on a November night; a swirl of smoky evil, and you've got a potent story about obsessive love and revenge from beyond the grave. I don't dare read this in an empty house.
