newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
True stories from the "Grimsby Ghostbusters" casebook told in a chatty, yet chilling style. Two school-girls who created a menacing "thought-form." A horrific evening in a church with two huge unearthly bats and a slime-colored mist arising from a tomb.

Ghosthunter, Investigating the World of Ghosts and Spirits, Eddie Burks and Gillian Cribbs, 1996, photos, biblio, index, 406 pp. Sorry, this book is no longer available. Please ask us to find you a nice used copy.

Burks investigated the notorious haunting of Coutts & Co. Bank (the Queen's own, don't you know....), which, until Eddie intervened, had been haunted by the beheaded Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk. Burks seems to have been in touch with most of the aristocrats of the spirit world including Mary, Queen of Scots; Anne Boleyn; Evelyn, Duchess of Devonshire; King Charles I; the guardian angel of Windsor Castle; and multiple ghosts at the Tower of London. Interesting, but rather bland stories. The ghosts never seem to be able to tell their own names and it seems awfully easy to make them move along.

Ghostly Encounters: True Tales of the Ghouls, Spooks and Spectres in the Lives of the Famous, Astrid St Aubyn with Zahra Hanbury, 1996, 147pp. $15.95 HB

A veddy British collection of personal supernatural encounters by celebs. I must confess that most of the names were unknown to me. Apart from a smattering of film stars and musicians, it was mostly Right Hons and OBEs. A few of these stories are very short and unvarnished, but there are some really fascinating tales here. Edward Woodward's encounter with a hurricane-like spirit. Earl Spencer, who appeared to the housekeeper. "We miss you, my lord," she told his ghost. "Do you?" he said, and disappeared. Rosemary Brown (who channeled famous musicians), healing cellist Julian Lloyd Webber's hand.

Ghosts and Legends of the Lake District, J.A. Brooks, 1988, photos and line art, 144 pp. $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Tales of witches, mountain ghosts, giants and fairies from this beautiful and haunted district. The skulls that haunted Calgarth Hall, the ghost of the poet Wordsworth, and a horrifying boggle with a face like the melted tallow poured down his throat that killed him. One of Britain's best-documented vampire stories.

The ghosts of a murdered young couple who beg for mercy when the wind is howling at gale in Winnats Pass. More black dogs and temperamental skulls. A nasty water spirit covered in slime at Doxey Pool on top of a mountain.
