Ghosts, like the fair young girl with the purple-spotted skin of the poisoned, giants--this is the land of Jack, the giant-killer, and "Little Folk" who tap, tap, tap their way through the tin mines.

Devon Ghosts, Theo Brown, photos and line art, biblio., 144 pp. $8.95

When the Devil walked in Devon, black dogs, and the demonic ghost who shredded clothing, twisted a young man's legs around his neck, and made shoe-laces move like serpents. Mostly stories drawn from folklore and popular legend. I really like this book!

England's Ghostly Heritage, Terence Whitaker, 1989, photos, index, 220 pp. $21.95 HB
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Terence Whitaker's usual factual style, but chilling as all get-out! The grinning ghost of a crazy, half-starved housemaid at Bristol. At Croydon airfield, the ghost of an RAF pilot in full flying kit who hurled a dummy in an SS uniform across the room. The book dealer who saw the decomposed ghost of a murdered woman standing by the sink where she was dismembered by her husband. The screaming pigs of Cholesbury.

The Ghost Handbook, Anne & John Spencer, 1998, photos, biblio, index, 309 pp. $25.00
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
The ghosthunting Spencers, authors of The Encyclopedia of Ghosts & Spirits, state that the book intends to "catalogue an interesting collection of ghosts, hauntings, and associated legends around Britain in sites that are largely accessible to the public and therefore to the amateur ghostwatcher." They’re much too modest! The index alone runs to seven double-columned pages in small type. The Spencers offer a wealth of information on haunted castles, churches and priories, stately homes and palaces, theatres, battlegrounds, sites of murder and execution. Or, if your tastes run to ghosts al fresco, there are tales of phantom hitch-hikers, railway spirits, and the ubiquitous phantom coaches, Britain’s "signature phantom". Ghosts with a mission, screaming skulls, poltergeists, timeslips, anniversary and cyclical ghosts, also get their own chapters. And if you’re in the mood to tip a pint with a pooka or share your bed with a boggart, there is a thoughtful listing of haunted restaurants, pubs, and hotels. Top-drawer!

The Ghosthunters Almanac, A Guide to Over 120 Hauntings, Peter Underwood, 1993, photos, biblio, 199 pp. $17.00 HB
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
This packably slim volume lists Locations, History, People, Manifestations, Probable Identity, Frequency, Witnesses and Evidence for over 120 British hauntings. There's a lot of information packed into these pages and it would be ideal for planning a ghost tour. Leap Castle, which photographer Simon Marsden said was the most frightening place he'd ever photographed. The ghostly sound of racecars at Brooklands. A generous helping of haunted Scottish castles.

F * Ghost Stories of a Norfolk Parson, John Barnes, 1986,  114 pp. NOW UNAVAILABLE. ASK ABOUT OUR OUT-OF-PRINT SEARCH SERVICE.
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Described as a "subtle mixture of fact and fantasy," these stories are drawn from Barnes' experiences as Vicar of Walsingham, Norfolk. Think M.R. James meets James Herriot. Very gentle-spirited, understated tales where the ghosts leave behind the smell of tobacco, the sound of footsteps or a puddle of stale water.

Contents: New Year's Eve, Highgrove, The Third Bell, The Smell of Tobacco, The South Calke Road, The Two 'Cellists, One Pound a Year. The Priory Lake, The Penitent, A Complimentary Lunch, The Priest's Door, The Black Velvet Cap.
