500 British Ghosts & Hauntings A hefty paperback detailing 500 of the best-known British sites in brief. A useful reference, but directions to sites are not given and a few entries are extremely short. Much of the material was new to me: The horrific "Bele Sheephead"--half human, half sheep completely murderous--who haunts a Cumbrian moor, the ghost of a tortured nun at Watton Abbey, "Dickie" the Screaming Skull at Tunstead Farm.

The A-Z of British Ghosts, An illustrated guide to 236 haunted sites, Peter Underwood, 1992, photos, biblio, index, 256 pp, THIS BOOK IS NOW UNAVAILABLE. Ask us about finding you a used copy.

The A-Z of British Ghosts From Abbots Langley to Woburn Abbey (all right, all right.... "A-W," then.) Dr Underwood, president of the Ghost Club, tells of legendary and real life experiences. Underwood gives a balanced and factual view, yet still makes you feel like he's giving you a personal tour. He summarizes well-known cases (Borley, Hampton Court, and Glamis Castle) and less well-known (Gargoyle Theatre, London; Woburn Abbey; Langenhoe Church, where the rector encountered the enthusiastic embrace of a naked female ghost at the near-by Manor House!) Every entry includes the address of a nearby hotel so you can easily make an overnight stay.

Britain's Haunted Heritage-Brooks, J.A. Brooks, 1991, photos, 223 pp. $39.95 HB
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
A stunning coffee-table book with beautiful color photos of haunted houses. I think they covered every ghost story in Britain: Lady Hoby, whose portrait leaves the frame to walk the halls of Bisham Abbey; the hideous heir of Glamis Castle, an egg-shaped monstrosity imprisoned forever in its walls; the Brown Lady of Raynham, with her empty eyesockets. Whitby Abbey, where Abbess Hilda appears in an upper window, in her shroud. Interviews with haunted noble families, folklore, history, and juicy scandal. If you buy only one book on British ghosts, make this the one.

Legendary hauntings of Britain from the haunted barracks of St. Jame's Park, London to Pethshire's house of terror and the troubled spirit of Tintern Abbey, Wales. Wardley Hall: otherwise known as "Skull House" for the stubborn skull who raises a ruckus whenever anyone tries to move it. The ghost of young Dorothy, who haunted the room where she was buried beneath the floorboards.

Cambridge College Ghosts, Geoff Yeates, 1994, photos, biblio., 126 pp. $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Cambridge's history and ghosts are inextricably entwined in this latest addition to the Jarrold series. Clare College's original "Skeleton in the Cupboard." A hideous, evil-smelling apparition with no ears at Sidney Sussex College. The story of one unnamed college and why its history is best left unwritten.

Collins Ghost Hunters' Guide to Britain, Selected by John and Anne Spencer, 2000, photos, index, maps., 185 pp. $22.95 HB

Beautiful, lush picture book with the great selection and marvelous research we've come to expect from the Spencers. There is surprisingly little duplication and overlap with the Spencers' other British/encyclopedia ghost books.
