Visit a bed & breakfast where mysterious organ music echoes through the house and the yellowed newspaper obituary of a former owner materialized in the middle of the floor. Or follow the "Fence Rail Dog" with its blazing eyes and great bushy tail. Or visit a talking grave that asks the eternal questions: Who? What? How? Why? Corpse lights, spectral ships and a ghostly bathing beauty crying for help.

Spirits Between the Bays: Vol. I Pulling Back the Curtain, Ed Okonowicz, 1994, line art, 64 pp. $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
The ghost of a watchmaker who tagged along on walks and helpfully found the missing minute hand of a cherished antique clock. A man knocked over by a ghost who hurled his own pet dog onto his chest. The headless horseman of Welsh Tract Church who still hunts the British. The first in a series of books on the ghosts of the DelMarVa Peninsula, this contains 10 stories based on interviews with residents of Delaware, Maryland, and two counties of Virginia. A treat from professional storyteller Okonowicz!

Spirits Between the Bays: Vol. II Opening the Door, Ed Okonowicz, 1995, line art, sources, 96 pp., $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
The second volume in the Delmarva series and another winner! "Old Blackie"--a dark, hunched figure in a black hooded shroud. Weathered barn paneling soaked with the blood--and the spirits--of two murdered slaves who could not rest until a medium showed them the door. The many spirits who haunt Woodburn, Delaware's Governor's Mansion: "The Colonel"--seen since 1805. "The Slave Kidnapper" who is seen hanging from a tall tulip popular, rusty chains rattling in his hands. "The Tippling Ghost," possibly Woodburn's builder, Charles Hillyard, who was fond of wine and spirits. "The Girl in Gingham," seen by the reflecting pool in the formal gardens. Excellent stories!

Spirits Between the Bays: Vol. III Welcome Inn, Ed Okonowicz, 1995, line art, 96 pp. $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
If you want to visit a haunted inn in Maryland or Delaware, try Kent Manor Inn where Alexander Thompson rides his white horse up the driveway and turns off the TV when he thinks the owner should be in bed. Or The Rockwood Museum, where a volunteer saw the ghost of an old woman tapping her cane along a hall. Later, when looking at a family photo album, she found a photo of the old woman. Or Bohemia House, where some say young Margaret was murdered and buried in the maze of tunnels under the house. Residents have seen the imprint of bodies in freshly made beds!

Spirits Between the Bays IV: In the Vestibule, Ed Okonowicz, 1996, line art, 106 pp $9.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
This series just gets better and better! A pair of haunted firehouses. A tidy ghost who raked the leaves. Patty Cannon, Delmarva's bloodthirsty serial killer. A ghostly mare and her equally ghostly handler. A night straight out of The Shining spent at the hotel "with the weird-looking roof." Storyteller Okonowicz also demonstrates his flair for fiction with a tale of an unforgettable anniversary dinner at the "Settling Inn."

Presence in the Parlor: Spirits Between the Bays, Vol. V, Ed Okonowicz, 1997, line art, 106 pp $9.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
I made the mistake of reading this book alone, after dark. As a ghosthunter, I get a bit blasé about tales of mysterious footsteps, lights flickering on and off, the feeling of a "presence," etc. etc. But I was reading along, innocently minding my own business, when I found myself suddenly overwhelmed by a nameless fear. Okonowicz lulls the reader into a false sense of security and then—wham! He hits you with some terrifying detail that sets you looking back nervously over your shoulder, heart pounding. This expert storyteller can even make a vanishing hitchiker story fresh and startling. Watch out for the terrified search dogs at the USS Constellation, a haunted parsonage, and a rocking chair with a mind of its own. Highly recommended.

Spirits Between the Bays, Vol. VI, Crying in the Kitchen, Ed Okonowicz, 1998, 100 pp $9.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
This, the sixth in the popular "Spirits Between the Bay" series, focuses on spirits in the bays—and streams, and waterways. Okonowicz starts off with a little meditation on the creatures that could be lurking beneath our floors—under the sink and in pipes, septic systems and cesspools—which just about made me climb on top of the table. The author is a powerful storyteller; except that these are not just stories—they are all-too-real experiences. A human-shaped, cold, black mist at the Lewes Ferry Terminal.   A headless man in an 18th century caped greatcoat—seen by two couples independently. The mysterious caped figure with a lantern who haunts Ft. Delaware. "Captain Dan," who repeatedly ripped new wallpaper from the walls of his study until allowed to chose the pattern.
In a series of chilling vignettes, Okonowicz also takes a look at the question of whether haunted house owners have an obligation to tell potential buyers about their ghosts. The last chapter: "Legend and Lore" contains three fictionalized versions of local legends like a headless horseman and seal-people who change their shapes.
