The Unexplained: Ghosts and the Supernatural,
Colin Wilson, 1998, photos, index, 37 pp NOW OUT
OF PRINT. ASK US TO FIND YOU A NICE USED COPY.
A quickie look at hauntings, ghosts, vampires, and other
supernatural beings. Lots of good photos, but not a lot of depth: most cases are only a
paragraph or two. Kind of a "My Big Golden BookŪ of Ghosts." The singing ghost
of Raffles Hotel, Singapore; Marilyn Monroes haunted mirror. A spectral skeleton
photographed in a car involved in a terrifying crash. Ghost-detecting equipment and types
of ghosts.

The Usborne
Book of the Haunted World, Caroline Young, 1995, illustrations
with a few photos, picture maps, 48 pp $8.95
I fell in love with this oversize (8.5 x 12") book at
first sight. Lots of colorful illustrations and some unusual cases. Arranged by category
and country--over 50 tales from around the world. Royal phantoms, ghostly battles,
messages from the dead, spooks at sea and more. The ghostly cat who appeared in his
master's photograph. A phantom climber who left a prophetic message about a doomed Everest
expedition. A mysterious guest at a party in Finland.

Usborne
Hotshots, Ghosts, 1995, line art, index, 31 pp $2.95
The perfect pumpkin- or stocking-stuffer. Quick takes on
ghosts around the world as well as famous spirits like Napoleon's ghost, some of Henry
VIII's wives at Hampton Court, poltergeists, haunted ships, famous haunted houses, How to
Draw Ghosts. Just a tiny bit of overlap with the other two Usborne books.

Usborne World
of the Unknown: Ghosts, 1995, photos, line art, index, 32 pp $6.95
Sections on a dictionary of ghostlore, clever fakes, ghost
stories explained. I enjoyed the photo spread on the ghosts of Pluckley, reputedly
Britain's most haunted village. Other unique ghosts: the spirit of Pancho Villa, Tom
Colley, hung and rotted in a gibbet, who now haunts the crossroad as a black dog. Contains
a little bit of the material from the Usborne Book of the Unknown World, but not
much.

Velcome! A very scary book, Kevin OMalley, 1997,
illus., 24 pp $16.95
A very silly book of bad jokes and shaggy ghost
stories. I loved every terrible pun and there were some real groaners here. The copyright
page has a sign that reads, "WARNING!!! This is the most intelligent part of this
whole book." Believe it. Absolutely perfect for storytelling at sleepovers/campouts
since the stories are short and easily memorized.
