A 20-year diary of ghostly tales, these short anecdotes are arranged in the order in which the author heard them. Ghostly Chinamen, a grand piano with a death-wish for its owner, and a fog peopled with ghostly shapes are just a few of these snippets of ghostlore from the Monterey area.

An outstanding effort from California ghosthunter Senate (see Seeing Ghosts with Richard L. Senate), who is a thorough and no-nonsense investigator. He has much new to report here as he divides his material by location: "haunted theatres" "haunted jails" "haunted cemeteries" etc. Emphasis is on places you can visit! Haunted Hollywood High School. The ghost of cowboy star William S. Hart and his ghostly Great Danes at his Santa Clarita estate. A phantom window that looked out into the past. A special treat was the table of "101 California Haunts" which lists locations of 101 haunted sites open to the public, most with their addresses, phones, and brief data about the haunting.

The Ghosts of Ojai: California’s Most Haunted Valley, Richard Senate, 1998, illus, 36 pp SORRY! Now out of print. Ask us to find you a used copy.
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Pronounced "Oh-hi’", this valley in Ventura County is just crammed with spooks! Mostly short snippets of local lore like the choking ghost of the Ojai Manor Hotel. Or the legendary "Char-man" who haunts lovers’ lanes with his horribly burned face and the stench of charred flesh. The vicious Black Dog of the Ojai, possibly the ghost of a conquistator’s dog, once used to brutally hunt down the native peoples.
