13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey, Kathryn Tucker Windham and Margaret Gillis Figh, 1969, photos, 120 pp. $13.00

If you haven't yet met Jeffrey, you should know that he is a mischievous "something" who lives in the Windham home in Selma. Early in the book, Mrs. Windham tells how she first met Jeffrey and how he posed for his photograph. The story serves to introduce thirteen other chilling tales ranging from the spectral steamer Eliza Battle which burned to the water one cold February night, to the ghostly face of a lynching victim etched on the Pickens County Courthouse window. The Jeffrey books are a delightful mix of Southern folklore and fact.

The Face in the Window and Other Alabama Ghostlore, Alan Brown, 1996, photos, notes on informants and folk-motifs, 176 pp $19.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
Short, unembellished tales from the oral tradition. Primarily for the folklorist, but there is some chilling raw material here that could be developed by a storyteller. Cries that come from inside the haunted pecan tree of Gilbertown. The notorious face in the window of the Pickens County Courthouse. I got the willies reading about a "thing with wings" like a big black vulture that swept down a narrow alley towards the witnesses. The ghost of a murderer with a bullet-shaped head and eyes that got redder and redder wasn't much fun either.

Haints, Ghosts & Boogers, Chillbump Stories from Alabama After Dark, Lynn Grissard Fullman, 1995, line illus, 119 pp. $8.95
newinkl3.gif (884 bytes)
A good mix of contemporary and historical Alabama ghost stories. The death-leap of a Birmingham ironworker into molten iron, gruesomely replayed every year on the anniversary of his suicide. The ghost of Fearnway who saved a drowning child. The spirit who sneaks smokes in the Linn-Henley Research Library. This book seems to be written for young adults--ages 9 and up, but it's still very enjoyable.

A ghost who played ragtime, ghost-riders in search of their ears, cut off by a Confederate guerrilla, and a lover's death-bed promise kept for Eternity. Another magical book from Jeffrey.
